My Grandfather's WWI record
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 09:01 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I have found my Granfather's pension records on Anc* and I am so pleased to have these and think  ??? that I understand them!

He was born and lived in Birmingham and served with the West Yorkshire Regiment and Royal Defence Corps and my ignorance of anything military is throwing up so many questions in my mind.

After finding his records, I went to the National archives records online and downloaded his medal record. There isn't a great deal of information...or maybe there is but I do not understand the relevent details  ::)

I am wondering why he would serve with the West Yorkshire regiment and also why would he have two numbers?

Can anyone help please?

Thank you so much for reading this garbled message  :-[ and I will attempt to attach the record and here is the detail.

Harry Towner
West Yorkshire Regiment, 15545, Private
Royal Defence Corps, 88557, Acting Lance Corporal

14-7-15
Hi
Looks like he joined up early in the war and deployed to France with the West Yorkshires on 14-7-15
Why the west Yorks and from Birmingham i cannot answer but often you were sent to where men were needed
If you have is pension record off ancestry does it mention sickness/injury
?
The Royal Defence Corps was for men unfit for frontline duty and usually UK Based.
He was entitled to 15 Star British War Medal and Victory Medal..The numbers next to them on the card are the Roll books page reference at the National Archives they may give you which battalion he served in.
When he was transferred rom WYR he was given a new number and rank Lance Corporal.

A guess at to what batallion would be 10th as they deployed as part of 17th division those dates in 1915.

Hope this helps.
