Hi Angie ;)

Did George Die in 1850 Great Broughton  and do you have his death cert?

Have you seen the parish register entry for George & Mary's marriage or have you just got this from the IGI.  Try posting on the Cheshire LOOK UP BOARD for the Parish Register entry - someone may have access to the records office.

Cheers :-*

Hi Angie,
You might like to look at the Cheshire surnames directory on the site for the  Cheshire Family History
www.fhsc.org.uk as there are people listed as researching the surname Gorst and from Northwich.

Hi Angie ;)

Im not researching them myself Id just thought I would look to see if I could help ;D

The George Gorst that married in 1800 to Mary Rowlinson was born about 1776 (+/-5)according to the 1841 census - he is living at Cockpitt Field Northwich Great Budworth and is a Flatman ( In 19c a common term for a person who assembled several portions of machinery together {a joiner} or the other meaning  ~ A coal broker.) His wife Mary is a year younger and both were born within the county.

I doubt that John (1849) could be George & Mary's son as Mary would have been in her 60's :o when he was born!

In 1851 Mary is a widow living on Church Street Northwich born abt 1782 (1841 census isnt as accurate!) She is a greengrocer born Northwich. She has a son Samuel with her who was born about 1819 and has some sort of disability (sorry I cant make this out!) HO107/2165; Folio: 452; Page: 43. She is a Widow.

On FreeBMD I found a possible death for George in 1850 Great Budworth District (his abode in 1841) so I assume this his is death. (although there are others in Northwich District between 1841 and 1851 so cant be sure )

I can't find a birth for JOHN Gorst born 1849 Northwich (I searched between 1846 and 1851)the nearest  I found is one in  Great Broughton 1847 which covers Chester and one in 1849 in Congleton which covers Sandbach. The one born Chester was son of John Gorst and Mary Birch and the other one born in Sandbach was the son of Thomas & Catherine (Information from 1851 census)

Are you sure you have his D O B correct? (1849)

Cheers :-*

The marriage of John Gorst to Ann Boswell took place at St Wilfrid's, Davenham as follows:-
01 OCT 1837 John GORST/full/bach/Boilermaker/Leftwich/George Gorst/Blacksmith  m  Ann BOSWELL/full/spinster//Anderton/Thomas Boswell/Wheelwright.  After Banns. Witnessed by WilliamXBoswell & EllenXBoswell.

George Gorst, the father was a Blacksmith and his son John was baptised at St Helen's, Witton as follows:
John son of George GORST of Winnington, Blacksmith of George & Marths Gorst of Northwich and Betty dtr of William & Ann Blease of Northwich. Born 13 AUG 1808. Bap 04 SEP 1808.

these are from the parish registers of the above mentioned churches.

hope this helps with the elimination.
odessa.
