Ger[r]ard Makinson birth? Solved maybe?
« on: Monday 30 July 07 13:30 BST (UK) »
In the 1871 census he was 27, est. birth 1844 , born Compstall, Cheshire.
Gerrard married Hannah Clulo Dec. 1972 Manchester, an accountant on marriage cert.
On the birth cert for William, first son, in 1875 he was a book keeper.
In the 1881 census he was 36 born Compstall, Cheshire, unemployed Commercial Traveller.
On the marriage certs of his 8 children [so far, he had 9] he was variously described as clerk, book keeper and accountant.
He died aged 44 in April 1890, a chain maker's clerk.

I can't find his birth! :o Can anyone help or suggest a way forward.
I have checked Free BMD and looked through Find My Past. There does not seem to be a birth entry in Ancestry.
I have just found a JERARD Makinson b. Stockport 1844. Compstall is in the district list.

Hi kooky, I've just checked CheshireBMD
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk
and the Jerard Makinson you've found is listed as registered in the Marple sub-district of Stockport; (Compstall being part of Marple)- I reckon you've found him - well done!

kooky - hope you get the certificate OK.
I haven't got access to the census, but 1851 is the year that parts are missing for Manchester due to "water damage", so this could be why you can't find them (I have same thing with some of my OH's lot).  There's a listing on Ancestry of areas missing at
http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8860&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0
Manchester & Lancashire FHS have transcribed this and it is now on FamilyHistoryOnline (pay to view) and on CD
http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/
It could be worth trying a specific "unfilmed" request in case anyone has the CD.
