Marriage Look up Please - OAKES/BOULD
« on: Wednesday 01 August 07 04:06 BST (UK) »
Would someone be kind enough to check on a marriage for me
between Joseph OAKES and Maria BOULD date 1 Sept 1843
I am searching for the father of Joseph and the father of Maria,I suspect Maria,s father maybe Richare Bould.
However I am uncertain of Joseph Oakes father.
 Would appreciate any assistance.

Hi Glenys
I am afraid that the only way to get that sort of information about a marriage is to get the certificate.  The parish register does not record fathers' names unless they happen to be witnesses.   You could try looking for the families in the 1841 census but it is a bit of a Catch 22 situation as without the certificate to confirm names and occupations you cannot be sure you have the right family.
Where did they marry?  Staffordshire covers a large area.   Do you have any census information for them?   The more information you can give the better.

Not true, sorry.
Parish registers after 1837 usually do have fathers names & occupations. ( I thought they had to)

1 Sept 1843 - how sure of this date are you?  The full marriage index for England and Wales has no Joseph Oakes/Oaks or Maria Bould/Bold marriage for September Q 1843.

Sorry - you are right Graham.  I was thinking of pre 1837 registers when they do not have the father's name.  Too early in the morning!  Mea Culpa.

Is it possible Maria was widowed and thus was marrying under a different surname?

Are we talking about the family who live in Ranscliff and have lots of kids?  Martha, Samuel, Hannah, John, Eliza, Solomon, Jacob??
If so then all the births seem to be registered in Wolstanton so it is possible the marriage was in that area.
It would help if you can give us some more information as there are a surprising number of Oakes in that area and they all seem to use the same names for their children.

The family who you mentioned that are  living in the Radcliff area are the correct family, Jacob is my Great  Grandfather, however I am trying to establish who Jacobs grandfather is, just a question are we able to get birth certificates before 1837,as I was under thi impression that the info was kept only on parish records before 1837,this making it impossible to apply for a certificate before 1837 ?????
Thank You Glenys Queensland

Yes.  General registration started in late 1837 so everything before that has to come from parish registers.  You can get the films of most parishes from your local LDS centre and search them there.  They are worldwide.
However the marriage you were asking about is post 1837 so as all their children are registered in Wolstanton I thought the marriage might be too.  Gallium has checked the full index for the date you gave and the marriage does not appear so you may need to widen the search.  How do you know Maria's maiden name?  Where did you get the date from?
