If he was born after Sept 1837 then the Knighton Register Office will hold a record.
Before that the only record will be in the regstser of the parish church or chapel where he was baptised.

Going off the 1881 census he was born around 1838, so I have found that on Ancestry under March 1838... but the 1881 census is a bit wrong and I am struggling finding the family in 1841 and 1851...lol... I have decided they were that far up a hill in the middle of the mountains that they were not listed.either that or they avoided them thinking they were collecting the rent..lol..

I have checked all shropshire, herfordshire and montgomery.. I know they ended up in Bilston in staffs by 1861 it is placing them before that.

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it

Where is he on the 1881 Census ?

Do you have a marriage Certificate for him ? This would give his father's occupation.

There is a William Thomas born in the March Quarter of 1838 and registered at Knighton - have you seen this ?
Then a few around 1840/1 in Presteigne.

The knighton one is the one i am thinking is him, his father Richard was showing on the IG on Williams marriage to my gt gt grandmother, so i never thought there was a need to buy the marriage cert, as I know his father was Richard

On Richards census in Bilston in 1861 it just says montomgermyshire Class: RG9; Piece: 2006; Folio: 59; Page: 21

In the 1871 census.the place it says he was born is not a proper place so i persume it is a transcription error,   Class: RG10; Piece: 2950; Folio: 173; Page: 20

It looks like the marriage in 1863 was Richards 2nd marriage to Sarah Cullis..

There is another Son Richard jnr born in 1844 and i have his baptism details which say his mother was Ann  http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=431771

On a possible census there is lso a daughter Hannah Thomas is showing on the 1851 census but the mother is named as Mary, I have traced this griffiths family and Mary returns back to Griffiths after 1861,.. which is when Richard married Sarah Cullis..

However I cannot read where Hannah was born ( it says thomas on the printed sheet but on the orginal it is Hannah

I think if the 1851 census is my Gt gt gt grandfather it looks like he was a bit of a womanizer...lol...

Getting the birth certificate for William from the Registrar in Knighton will tell you the parents names, father's occupation, and his mother's maiden name, as well as the possiity of an address.
The Registration District covered a number of Parishes so that could pinpoint a place of birth hopefully.

The marriage certificate could also be full of clues.
