Glamorgan Family History Society
« on: Wednesday 01 August 07 20:20 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I came across the Glamorgan Family History Society in some notes that I have.  I was wondering if anyone is a member an if it is worth while.  Also could you tell me how much it costs.

Thank you

Cathie

It costs £9 Sterling for UK members, £11 Sterling for overseas members per annum.

I'm not a member, but if you visit this link, you'll find out all you need to know.

I'm a member of the Glamorgan FHS. I've only managed one of their meetings (the Cardiff branch) but that was quite interesting and I'm planning to get to a few more in the future. I've also had some very helpful (and prompt) look ups done for me from parish records.
Jones - Rhondda Valley/Neath
Harvey - Swansea/Calstock Cornwall
Blethyn - Pembrokeshire
Bowen - Pembrokshire
Vernon - Cheshire/Lancashire
Davies - Cardiganshire
James - Monmouthshire
Tozer - Calstock Cornwall
Brooks - Devon
Bonhomme - Calstock Cornwall/Jersey/Normandy
Massey - Lancashire

Thank you SS from the Rhondda,

I will keep it in mind

Thanks Welsh Jules,

I live in Canada so going to meetings is not an option, but look ups for parish records sounds interesting.   I think I will wait until after I visit Cardiff next year, then decide.

Thanks again both of you for your help.

Kassie

You also get a journal magazine quarterly. Its usually got some interesting articles and news in it, along with the usual details of information requests and help and details of upcoming events.

The Society also has its own resource centre in Aberkenfig - if you're planning a trip to Wales. Its only open on certain days though so its best to check first.

I'm a member too, and I too am not resident in Wales, although I am in the UK  :)
I've made several trips to the Aberkenfig resource centre, it's worth a trip, and the volunteers on duty are so helpful.  I've also used the look up service again its excellent.  The journal is interesting too, you can I think "affiliate" yourself to a branch of interest, Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend, Pontypridd etc. and ask for help from them too.
I think it's good value for money. :)

It's also worth noting that the membership runs from January to January...& so it might be worth waiting a few months before joining up!
