Out Pensioner, Chelsea Hospital....

Hello all Rootschatters.......     Hoping to find someone out there that can help me re Military Records..?
My 4x Gt Grandfathers death certificate (1851 aged 63 years) has turned up a surprise......as well as his occupation (House Painter) he is given as " Out Pensioner of Chelsea Hospital from the 31st Regiment of Foot "
He died in Stockport,Cheshire...appears on the 1841 census for that County..so must have left the Army well before then..
Does anyone know where i can find records for the Chelsea Hospital or the 31st Regiment of Foot ?

My gg grandfather was also an out patient of Chelsea. All that means is that he received a pension as a result of his being a soldier. Chelsea Hospital will, alas, have no records. 

The good news is that you can find his Army records at Kew.  The staff there will be very helpful.

My Gt Grand was an Out-Pensioner too. From what I gather, it meant that he received an army pension but wasn't an invalid, so he live outside the Chelsea Hospital with his family and had a job.

I think the Pension Pay records are kept at Kew.

Try posting on the Armed Forces board. They will know a lot more.

I have the discharge documents for one of my ancestors.

Try here http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search/quick_search.aspx

Search for the persons name.  If it is a common name you may get a lot but worth looking.  I'm not sure how to search for just discharge documents.

Hi Sylviaann.....Thanks for that..have had a look this evening. You say you have discharge documents for one of yours...Can i ask did you get them from Kew and did you have to go personally to get the. (Not able at this time to get there myself and wondering how to manage it) ?
Did you use a researcher ?
