1841 Census Look-up - Tongue
« on: Wednesday 08 August 07 00:37 BST (UK) »
Would like to find the following family in the 1841 Census.  I have marriage cert. from GRO as follows:  Isaac Bates married Phoebe Ann Tongue July 27, 1940 in Parish of Edgbaston.    She was living on Vauxhall Lane.  He was on Bell Ba. . Row.    Marriage registered in District of Kings Norton.    Also, in what church were they married?

Hi, welcome to Rootschat  :)

Does the marriage certificate also give their ages, occupations and fathers' names and occupations?  Is the name of the church not mentioned on the certificate? The more information you can give the better we can help you.

There is a John Tongue, silversmith, with wife Phoebe and children living in Ladywood, Birmingham ref: HO107/1140/4 fol.33 p.17 full details if they are her parents

Hi Barbara,  On the Certificate Isaac Bates is a Toolmaker and his father Benjamin Bates is a Steel Cons. . .     Phoebe Ann Tongue's father is Samuel Tongue, laborer.   Marriage solemnized at the Parish church in the Parish of Edgbaston, County of Warwick.   Diane

Hi Diane

The Church of St. Bartholomew was known as Edgbaston Parish Church I think, see www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=22975

Here's Samuel but not Phoebe:

Rebecca 45 Midwife    N
Sarah     17 Steel Pen Piercer  Y
Samuel   14 Forging      Y

Barbara, I may have found Isaac Bates and his wife, Phoebe Ann Tongue, in the 1841 census:

1841 HO107/1150/2 fol.23 p.9
Aston
Portland Street,1,Benjamin Bates,60,,Edge Tool Maker Journeyman,Not in county,
Sarah Bates,,60,,Not in county,
Charles Bates,30,,Edge Tool Maker Journeyman,Not in county,
Isaac Bates,20,,Edge Tool Maker Journeyman,WAR,
Ann Bates,,15,,WAR,

That would make Phoebe (Ann) only 15 years old.  On the marriage cert. it says "Of Full Age".

Hi Diane,

Well done, I hadn't got round to finding them.  :)

In the 1841 census ages of adults were rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so this Ann could have been anything from 15 to 19 - which could be ok.
