STOKES and ACTON
« on: Thursday 09 August 07 15:28 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

I'm trying to help a neighbour get started on her family tree.  Her parents were Frank STOKES and Edna May ACTON, both born in West Bromwich, in 1908 and 1912 respectively.  Frank had a twin brother called Ernest STOKES.  Frank died about 1941 and Ernest died about 1938.

Edna May's parents were William ACTON and May HINGLEY.  Does this ring any bells?  I'd love to hear from anyone who can expand the knowledge of this family.  My neighbour cannot afford to buy lots of BMD certificates.

Has she not got her parents Marriage Cert ? This would get you back a generation on the STOKES side..... especially as the STOKES brothers were born before Mothers Maiden names appear in the Index of Marriages .... if not, you'll have to buy at least one Cert - the Marriage or probably better, Frank or Ernests Birth Cert ...

As you have Edna ACTONs folks names a 1901 search may locate them - depending on frequency of names etc ....

I cant see a marriage yet transcribed in FreeBMD for ACTON / HINGLEY with those forenames ...

There's only two May Hingley of the right sort of age in 1901 ..

RG13/2680; Folio: 132; Page: 17 - Wolverhampton
Great Western Station

May Hingley 23  Single Assistant Railway Coffee Room born Rowley Regis.

The other lass was 8 years old - so would have been c20 in 1912, she was born in Amblecote to parents William & Ellen ..

RG13/2756; Folio: 113; Page: 34

So, opposite ends of the spectrum as it were .... really need a Marriage Cert ..  ;)

Births Jun 1892

and/or this lass, who is probably the Tea Room Lady above in 1901 census

Births Jun 1877

IF the marriage is 'good', it makes this chap a candidate .... IF (Ethel) May was a Rowley lass, then it would be customary to marry in the brides domain ....

1901 - RG13/2719; Folio: 36; Page: 26 - West Bromwich
57, Mt Pleasant Street

William Acton 11  born West Brom, son of J. William Acton (Stoker at Gasworks) and Sarah A. Acton

Anyways, no guarantees - just something to think about - ONLY the Marriage Cert(s) will verify ....

Hello Newf,

Many thanks for all that.  I had already done the FreeBMD bit and I think I've got that sorted but I am really grateful for the census information.  I'll take all this over to my neighbour (when she is back from the bowling) to see where she wants to go next and I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks again,

Jack
