Donald Grant/Margaret Ross - Ross-shire 1790-1810
« on: Saturday 11 August 07 06:12 BST (UK) »
Have I ever hit a brick wall!

I'm looking for information on Donald Grant and Margaret Ross.

I received information from an 1841 Census, but I cannot find any birth or marriage information on either.  I found that Donald was a 'pensioner with the 78th Regiment' but not much else.

GRANT Donald M 55 Army Pensioner Outside Census County (1841)
GRANT Margret F 35 Outside Census County (1841)
GRANT Mary F 6 Inverness-shire
GRANT Isabella F 4 Inverness-shire
GRANT John M 1 Inverness-shire

I've received birth certificates and Mary was born in Campbelton, Isabella and John were born in Ardersier, and there were 2 other children, Catherine and Margaret in Ardersier.

I'm pretty new to the search for ancestors.  Does "lawful" son/daughter mean they were married?

Both Donald and Margaret appear as "deceased" on their son John's marriage information in 1867.

Any information on places of birth or parents of Donald Grant and Margaret Ross would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tracy

Greetings from Ross & Cromarty  :)

First clue - 78th Regiment  :)

I've had a look on the National Archives site and find that there is a possible record for Donald

If you go to the bottom, you'll find that there is a Donald Grant , Born Nigg, 78th Foot, 1804-1813. Discharged aged 27 after 9 years and 3 months. This might well be him. You can order the documents online. They might well give you interesting info like his physical characteristics, etc.

WO 121/ 134/251

I'll look for any other BMD/census info next.

Regards

The 1841 that you have quoted has them living in Campeltown, Ardersier, Inverness-shire. Ref 91 ED 3 Page 5

Apart from the ones that you have listed there is also a Geroge Cameron, 60-64, also born outside Inverness and Independent.

I think we might have hit the jackpot on the 1851:

Fisher St, Campeltown, Ardesier, District 91 ED 3 Page 6

Donald Grant, 60, Chelsea Pensioner, B.Nigg, R & C
Margaret, 49, b. Ross-shire
Mary, 16, outdoor labourer,  b. Petty, Inv
Isabella, 14,
John, 12
Catherine, 9
Margaret, 7

All others born Ardesier.

I'd be ordering those War Office documents if I were you  :)

By 1861, Margaret had died but Donald is still alive so that we might be able to get his parents from a death certificate (post 1854)

Hi

Can't locate Donald's baptism but I have two possibles for Margaret Ross:

26 July1803, Cromarty - parents: David Ross and Marjory Gair

20 Jan 1804, Fodderty - parents: Donald Ross

I have a gut feeling that the Cromarty one is the most likely. See the parish map of R & C here:

http://scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-caithness.htm

Cromarty and Nigg are very close. In fact, they can be seen from the other across the water  :)

This parish map of Inveness shows how close Ardesier is to these two parishes across the Firth:

Wow! I am exstatic!

I was wayyyyyyyyy off on the parents of either.  That's what I get for relying on the LDS when all else fails.

thank you SO much for all this information.

I'm so new to this, and it's a bit like being a detective, isn't it?

Where are you able to find this information from? Is it the SP website? I must be searching wrong because I'm not finding as much information as you are.

Thank you so much!  Now I can dig around and see what I can find based on that information, it helps a great deal.

I am finding that a few of the same surnames are popping up in my Grant ancestry.  And when you think about it there probably were a lot of the same families in those areas so it makes sense, doesn't it?

And I am going to order that military record right away.  Thank you.

Hi Tracy  :)

The deaths were from Scotlands People and some local files that I have. I just followed your clues. The Army clue was a great help. I then checked the census information. Then the IGI (LDS) but that was not too helpful so I went to SP  :)

There are some tips on using SP so that you can minimize your units:

Also, if you're new to Scottish research,  it might be worth having a look here:

Good Luck  :)

When you get the WO info, do let us know all the details  :)
