how do you store all your paperwork?
« on: Monday 13 August 07 12:28 BST (UK) »
Hi folks
My study is knee deep in print-outs from LDS, Ancestry, RC etc and scribbling, certificates for all my branches of trees - at least 18 months worth ;D
How do you folk find the best way to store it for easy retrieval? can't just do it by surname, because obviously with things like marriage certs it has 2 surnames.
Help!
before I drown in paper :D :D

Ah Rev, that's when you start to utilise boxes in different colours .. . . one on the left side and one on the right side.

Good luck.

Then you get shelves with files

So far I have 11 files on one shelf and 7 on the other

I have a file for each surname.  In it I have a clear plastic wallet for each person, plus one for census information and certificates, more if there is a lot of paperwork.  Each generation is separated by one of those card seperators.  I write up a sheet or more about each generation.  I don't follow the brothers and sisters too much except where they are in the census.  I can do more later when I am really at a full stop.  I don't have seperate files for certificates as they are not originals.  I am starting to add copies of photos.

I do have some files with several names as I haven't managed to find too much about them.

Most of it is also on my computer

Like Sylviaann I have a coloured file for each family, sticking to 4 main colours for each of my Grandparent's sides and their ancestors. Then I have another 4  folders of same colours for the census sheets etc.  All certificates etc go in the main folders.

The folders are then divided into families and the birth and marriage certificates go with the 'new' family, which would include brothers sisters etc.

At the moment photos are in a box - my next project.

Then there are files that other people have sent me, I don't mix them with mine until I have checked them, lastly the files I seem to accumulate of other people's families.

The folders store neatly in a large file holder under the desk. On top however I seem to always have lots of papers I'm 'working on'  - no-one dare disturb them.

If you have some things just on the computer it always pays to save them to disc or similar.
