With the utmost respect to all concerned I draw the conclusion that it is class V and that it is the third one down in the list of options which is "food and drink". What is a Bar Man if he is not involved with food and drink?

I didn't understand the explanation from Stanmapstone, and the web link is confusing to the uninitiated, but I got there.

On the basis that the person transcribing had an idle streak, and I point no finger for fear of a stone through my glass wall, is it not less work to write "V3" than "V12" so long as whoever was doing the tallying understood what was meant the work got done. How many times have the "Indians" developled a better way to do a job compared to the method set out by the "Chiefs".

The proof would be to see how the notation for another entry matched my take on the shorthand.

Interesting though and worth knowing about the web page if it helps decipher an illegible occupation.

Happy hunting

Hi Canuc,
Sorry my explanation is obscure :( I agree that it seems more sensible for the orders in each class to be numbered independantly, rather than consecutively from 1 to 18. So that, as you say  class V should be V1 to V6, and V3 would make sense :)
