Sri Lanka

Hi all

After a bit of help/advice.

My trying to trace what became of a Great Uncle, Stanley Godrey Rose (b.1898), who disappeared 'off the face of the planet' in 1927. He lived in India for several years, married an English women in Bombay in 1921, then subsequently divorced around 1926. The last trace I've found of him is that he was a passenger on a ship destined for Colombo from London in 1927.

I've gone through various on-line UK databases/BDM indices etc with no luck. Before I found the Colombo voyage, I'd always presumed he carried on living in India until his death but someone kindly checked the overseas BDM records in London for India with no trace.

My main question (finally), is would British nationals who died in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) be in a seperate index or would these details be included with India records from that era?

Any help would be appreciated.   Thanks

Hi there

The overseas BMD indexes are not separated into different countries - they cover the whole world from Accra to Zanzibar.

If a search of those has already drawn a blank it may be that, unfortunately, his death was not the subject of a consular registration.  Such registration has never been compulsory and therefore many vital events of British nationals are not to be found.

Sorry not to be more encouraging

http://www.interment.net/data/aus/qld/maroochy/namlaw/namlaw_qs.htm
 - spelling slightly off (actually I see in some of your other posts his middle nam is Godfrey not Godrey) , but there is a Stanley Godfrey Rose, born 1898 died 1972, in this Australian cemetery index.

National Archives of Australia shows that a Stanley Godfrey Rose, born 6 Jan 1898, London, enlisted for WWII, next of kin Jeanette Rose, place of enlistment Seymour, Victoria.
http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ItemDetail.asp?M=0&B=6106371 - not sure if this link will work, but if it doesn't, just find 'Recordsearch' on their front page and search for Stanley Godfrey Rose (all words).

http://www.gazette-online.co.uk/
If you search for Stanley Godfrey Rose here you get three entries, 1918, 1920, and 1945 - army related.
