John Williams, tin miner
« on: Wednesday 15 December 04 20:09 GMT (UK) »
John Williams was my grandmother's brother.  He was born in 1863 in Camborne, Cornwall.  In 1867 his father (another John) was killed in a mining accident and his mother died in 1876 leaving her two children orphans.  John worked as a tin miner and was still in England at the time of the 1881 census.  Soon after that he emigrated to Australia and eventually reached Charters Towers, Queensland where he married, had children and died in 1911.  He kept in contact with his sister but after his death contact between the two parts of the family was gradually lost (she lived until 1961).  For years I have wanted to find out about John's descendants, but I don't really know where to start.   Can anyone suggest ways?  Is there a Family History Society somewhere in that area?  All suggestions gratefully received
TIA

Hi,

Perhaps you could post this on the Cornwall board.  Give as much detail as you can about John's mother and sister, names approx ages, places of birth/residence etc.  If his mother lived until 1876 maybe they could be found on the 1871 census, or 1861 census.

If you can find them on an earlier census you could follow them forward throught the 1881, etc.  Do you know if John's sister married, do you have her married name?

Good luck with the search.

There are lots of links to family history in Charters Towers - Do an advanced Google - with family history in the exact  search and Charters Towers in "Match all words" - There were so many links - seems better that you choose the ones to follow.

Do you have the names of John's children? You can search the Oz white pages online. The family might have left CT of course but you can sometimes be lucky.
