1851 census lookup Mynyddyslwyn
« on: Wednesday 15 December 04 21:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

Would really appreciate it if someone could check the 1851 census for Abercarne, Mynyddyslwyn.

I'm looking for details of the family of Elizabeth Cook, born 1849 in Abercarne.   Her father was Francis Cook, occupation collier, and her mother's name was Mary.

This is the only relevant information I have.  Hoping someone can help, thanks in advance.

best wishes

Hi Pritch

They have moved to Llan per the Gwent Fhs index

LLANHILLETH 1851
HO1O7   2449   12 24

COOK FRANCIS  34
          MARY        31
          WILLIAM   12
           GEORGE   1O
           JAMES        6
           ELIZABETH  2

They are in Llan in 1861
RG9 4010 75 08

There are two or three Cook families on the
same folio so i cannot tell who belongs to who.

Hi again rhys

Many thanks for that very quick reply.  I did not expect them to be in Llan, was there a district or area of Llan called Abercarne, I know a part of Llan used to come under Mynyddyslywn.

I've come across this before, a record stating:  Abercarne, Llanhilleth.  Just can't think where though, i'll have to check my notes.
Never heard of it myself, the only Abercarn I know is the one two miles south of Newbridge.

Anyway, many thanks, will probably be in touch again about this post.

Hi Pritch

Have seen Abercarn (Mynyddislwyn) Described as Abercarne on census returns. Also on Genuki.
Never come across such a name in Llan.

The following site has a lot of census details of Llanhilleth parish. Does not include the Crumlin and Hafodrynys part which was in Lower llanhilleth

Hi rhys

You've confirmed my thoughts about Abercarne. I did'nt think there was an area of Llan by that name.  As to where i'd seen it before, I came across a record on Ancestral File that said Abercarne, Llanhilleth.

Anyway, I need to impose upon you for another favour.  Elizabeth Cook the subject of my first query, her maiden name was Brick.  Do you think you could have a look at the 1851 to check if there any families of that name in Abercarne.

I had a look at the Six Bells site, interesting.  Thanks for the link and thanks very much for all your help.

best

Hi rhys

Thanks for taking a look for the Brick family, I could not find any in the 1841 census either, although I do have a few areas still to search.

Yes, i'd be grateful for the 1851 info on Edwin Crook.  You did a previous search for me for Edward Crook, well Edward and Edwin are one and the same.  Edwin is his birth name but in all the census records I have seen he has been enumerated as Edward.  I'm pretty sure this will be him, born Risca 1846.  I'll be pleased to gather any information on other family members though.

Thanks again rhys
