Can anyone identify the regiment please.

I attach photographs of my uncle Albert Sydney Tagg.  I have not been able to find any details of his armed service despite a visit to Kew - I guess he was amongst the burnt records.

Until I discovered these pictures I did not even realise he was in the armed forces although I was aware his younger brother had died at the Somme. 

I would love any further details that can be gleaned from these pictures.

The NA's Documents Online has a medal card for Albert S Tagg of the Manchester Regiment, also a couple for plain Albert Taggs of other units.

Thanks for that - I had not considered that one because he was born and brought up in Middlesex and his brother served in the 16th Battn, Middlesex Regiment.

The only regiment that I can think of that had a completely round cap badge was indeed the Manchester Regiment which had about that time a circular badge with the royal arms inside the circle i.e. no crown above. So Shaun may very well be right.

The only cap badge the Manchester Regt had that was round was, when it was a foot Regt 63rd & 96th, and that was back in the late 1800s. The other badge would have been the Fleur-de-lis. At some point in the late 1890s the cap badge has been the Manchester City Coat of Arms until 1923, when it went back to the Fleur-de-lis, on the 1st Sept 1958 the Manchesters linked with the Kings Regt, to form the Kings Regt (Manchester/Liverpool) the badge then had the Kings White Horse of Hanover onto the Fleur-de-lis. The 1st Battalion Manchester Regt's old foot number was the 63rd of Foot, this was the second Battalion of the 8th of Foot, the 8th of Foot was the 1st Battalion Kings Regt.

Am still waiting for the Manchester Regiment forum to 'activate' me as well but I do appreciate all the help and suggestions.

Can anyone tell me why someone from Ealing should have joined the Manchester Regiment in 1917 - did they get posted willy nilly?
