Gone Doolally

For the next time you think, or if someone tells you, you've 'Gone Doolally', as I do now and then 


In the late 19th century, the British Army established a military base at Deolali, 100 miles north of Bombay, India. The base had an asylum where unstable battle-weary troops would be sent, but it also doubled as a transit camp where soldiers at the end of there tour would be stationed to await the boat home. The ships only lefy for Blighty between November and March so soldiers sometimes had months to wait for their transportation. The ensuing drawn-out weeks of heat, exhaustion and boredom often resulted strange and eccentric behaviour. This behaviour would be explained on their return to Britain as 'he's gone through Deolali'.

Hi daisy petal, my grandmother used that phrase to describe anyone who was not functioning normally in her opinion. I use it too. I have never thought of its origins so I was interested in your post. I will remember that next time I think a politician has gone doolally. Thank you for posting the information.
