Reading, Berkshire - HANNAY and DORSETT
« on: Wednesday 22 August 07 18:05 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information on great aunt Emily DORSETT b 1871 Reading, Berks and her husband Frank HANNAY also b1871 Reading Berks. They married in 1896 and may have had a daughter called Katherine.  Possible entry on BMD 1912 for her but no further info on her or her parents - anyone know of them?  Other family members emigrated to S Africa and Canada/USA so those are possibilities but I have lost them.  I would be grateful for any information.

Thanks - I hadn't noticed the births - have only just started on the Hannays.  As you say, they are not around as a couple on the 1901 census although Emily is at the DORSETT family home in Reading; that is how we know she married Frank.  But where is he? He should be somewhere and I can't find him. Any suggestions welcomed.

Hello Little Nell

Yes, these are my Dorsetts in Reading and Frank Hannay. In 1901 the father is gone, William, died in 1896, mum Eliza is away working in Newbury, eldest daughter Rose is working in London. The rest of the Dorsett family are together in Reading including Emily, now wife of Frank. Frank Hannay is missing from the census altogether - or at least, I can't find him; he's probably around somewhere. He can't be dead or Emily would be described as widowed rather than married, wouldn't she?

Where could he be? Army? An institution of some kind such as hospital or prison? He is not with his own family in 1901 either.

All suggestions welcomed. My thanks to you.

In 1901, he could have been in South Africa fighting in the army during the Boer War - just a possibility.

Ah. Thank you, I believe there were other relatives doing that. Does anyone know how I could check that? Is it possible?

I know of this site - doubtless there are others ...

perhaps a new thread in the Armed Forces section would get more focus ?

Cheers  :)
