Tir-y-ferch-Gronow
« on: Friday 24 August 07 16:52 BST (UK) »
William Thomas, b c.1812, Llanwonno, Glam was the farmer of Tir Ferch Gronow on the 1881C with wife Mary, sons Ellis, Thomas, David and daughter Jane, all born Bedweltty.

Can I ask for help to locate the property on the 1871C and/or 1891C.  Below are different ways I have seen it spelt.

Tir y Fach Grymo
Tir y Ferch Gryno
Tyr Verch Gronow

Regards
Roy

1891 Tir Ferch Gronow, Gelligaer RG12/4431 folio 115 pg 10
Mary Thomas head widow 69 farmer
David son 26 high ward of common (?)
Ellis son 42 blacksmith
Thomas son 32 clerk
Jane dau 34 housemaid
Jane Gwena ? niece 12 scholar
all born Bedwellty, all speak both Welsh & English

The writing isn't the best and the enumerator put marks over the occupations, so I'm not sure about David's occupation and can't make out the surname of Jane Gwena.
Can't spot the family in 1871 and can't see the farm in Gelligaer enumeration district 6 which is where it appears in 1881 & 1891.

Hi Osprey

For your info.  There was no homestead on the farm at the time of the tithe survey.  The land being occupied by William Lewis, the miller at nearby Mill House, Pontaber Bargoed.  I had difficulty locating the farm on the 51C & 61C and on checking with N.A. was informed that the final twenty pages of the enumerators returns for Brithdir Hamlet are missing, presumably lost forever.  Maybe that's the case for the 71C ?

Anyhow, thanks for all your efforts

Best regards
Roy
