1851 census look-up. Constant family
« on: Saturday 25 August 07 15:34 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the family of Francis  and Mary Ann Constant in the 1851 census.

Francis would be about 50 and was born in Normandy according to the 1861 census. Mary Ann was about 5 years younger. In 1841 they were in Toddington but by 1861 they were in Broadway. From the children's ages, they could have been in Winchcombe or Aston Somerville in 1851.

Thanks
Eric

Thanks Susan,
I had the christian name Sisum (Sysum) on the 1841 census, but I thought it was bad writing for Susan. There are no other Sisum christian names on the IGI but there are similar surnames in that area of Gloucestershire.

Hi Eric and Susan.

Mary ann Constants Nee Arlington was my Great Great Grandmother -
I am descended from Isobel Constant who was Mary Ann Constants daughter  from her marriage to Francis Constant.

I have a good amount of family history research so if I can be of any assistance I will be happy to help especially if you can add info to the family tree.

Yours Liz

Hi Liz
This is part of some research I am doing for a lady at church, who wanted me to find something about her grandfather and because it was quite an interesting family I got a bit carried away.
I traced the family back to Francis and Mary Ann, via their daughter Charlotte who married a William Vernall in 1863 in Birmingham. I traced the Allingtons back another 2 or 3 generations, but got no further with Francis Constant in Normandy. I was intrigued by him, as to how he was a British subject born in Normandy at that time which if I remember my history would have been about the time of the French Revolution and Napoleon. I did wonder if he had been a prisoner of war, but he was probably too young.
Virtually all I have is from the censuses and parish records on the internet.

Regards
Eric

Dear Eric.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Our information is mostly about Francis Constant from the time he arrived in this country.

Our info is that he ( and possibly more family members )  arrived with the Duke of Orleans from France, becoming an exile here.

He is supposed to have stayed at the Lygon Arms in Broadway ( Still there ) in the early 1800's.

Does your friend have any information more than the above.

Her Charlotte was Isobels ( my Great Grandmother's ) older sister,

Isobel also lived in Birmingham and was married to a William Taylor.
Isobel had middle names for her children, using the name Constant also De Villiers.

We live in Rugby in Warwickshire and would be happy to meet up to swap info if it will help.

Yours.

Hi

I was looking for more info on Francois Constant who is my 4th times Great Grandfather if anyone could shed any light.

My family has been in and around the Birmingham/Black Country are for sometime and my grandmothers name was a very unusual one and she was told it was French hence looking into the family history and being interested in Francois.

His daughter Isobel is my 3x Great Grandmother and her son Benjamin carried on using the Constant/Constance name when he moved to Birmingham
