Hello all

I was wondering if any one knew anything about this plaque .....It belonged to my great great Uncle..  I have contacted the Arial Cycle club,  BUT they are a motor cycle club,  and my cousin is sure this is for a Bike race ?? (pedal) .......Does any one reconise it .....

The award was won in 1894

Hi Craizi,

Do you know where your gtgt uncle lived when he got the plaque?  Perhaps the local history/family history society could help out.

I found a website about an "Ariel Works" in Selly Oak that had a cycling club but gives dates as from 1896!

Hi Craizi,

Have you thought of contacting the EoLFHS (East of London Family History Society)?  Their area includes Hackney; might just be able to find some info for you.

Good luck,

Ariel - wow, yes. I remember I once came close to buying a box of bits and a frame that claimed to have been an Ariel Square Four in a past life. Probably a good thing that I let the offer pass.

Anyway, lots of motorcycle companies started off with push bikes. The 1890s was a bit early for motorbikes. Ariel started life as a bicycle maker.

Hi Craizie

I was just Googling "Ariel Cycling Club" when I stumbled across your post. though it looks as though I'm about 3 years late in replying! My great grandfather was a member of the club (which was a bicycling club and not a motorcycling club).

I have in my possession a bound copy of 'The Ariel Gazette' (the club magazine) which covers the period May 1893 to March 1894, and it certainly contains some references to your great great uncle.

Attached are a couple of images which I hope will be of interest. The first is an advertisement:

it looks as though your great great uncle was the proprietor of a bicycle shop.

The second is a short piece about William E. Prust:
