Cuckfield/Worth IGI entry
« on: Monday 27 August 07 21:57 BST (UK) »
This is my first venture into Sussex and I'm not too familiar with the geography , so please bear with me.

I'm trying to locate a couple - Joseph and Sarah Symonds - who had numerous children in Hambleden, Bucks between 1740 and 1759.

Every now and then I have another go at trying to find their marriage - and I always come back to a few IGIs (unfortunately, of the 'submitted by a member' type!) which has a couple - Joseph Simons and Sarah Beard -  marrying in Worth, Sussex on 2/9/1731 and then having 4 children: John 1733, Sarah 1735, Mary 1736, Joseph 1737in Cuckfield, Sussex, which I believe is only a few miles away.

Now, a couple of the childrens' names are duplicated by the couple in Bucks, but that's not particularly unusual if the first child died. I'm just not sure that a couple would have travelled about 70 miles at this time?!

If someone could help verify (or not!) these submitted IGIs, see if the marriage gives any indication of the couple's parishes and perhaps see if there are any additional baptisms which would rule out this Sussex couple being the same people as my Bucks couple, I'll be very grateful.

It would be nice if I could finally knock down this particular brickwall!!   ;D

Hi Jill,

As far as the marriage is concerned, this couple married in Ardingly:

Joseph Symons,s of Hugo (presumably son) m Sarah Beard otp 2 Sep 1731

Thanks for that, Nell. I had to look up Ardingly - very near Cuckfield, so that's okay!

So much for family naming patterns - no sign of a Hugo either in Sussex or Bucks!  ::)

Do you know if Sussex FHS have a name search service? Perhaps, if no one on RC has the Cuckfield PRs, I could ask them to check the Cuckfield baptisms out and , hopefully, put this theory of mine to rest - one way or the other!

Hi
Cuckfield baptisms at that time should be on the IGI but you can also contact the Online Parish Clerk for Cuckfield who should be able to check the entries for you.
bcutlerATglobalnet.co.uk or Google the Cuckfield online parish clerk
I have the pre 1699 parish records and there are numerous Simons and variants entries so the family were well established around here.  No Hugo though.
I am afraid it is more likely that your couple married in a church not on the IGI so you will have to search all the local ones on film at your nearest LDS centre if you can.

Thanks, Andrea.

I actually found the 4 'submitted by a member' IGI baptisms mentioned in my first post on Family History Online and they're all confimed with more or less the same dates between 1733 and 1737. Cuckfield burials are also on Family HO and I couldn't see any burials relevant to this couple.

In a way, I was sort of hoping I would find some more baptisms to this couple in Cuckfield after these 4 that I mentioned, so that I could categorically tell myself that it wasn't the same couple who moved to Bucks and had children there from 1740!

As it is, I'm left wondering if it just might be one and the same couple who decided to move 70 miles away.

I just don't know - and it's bloomin frustrating!!!  :-\ :'(
