SEDMAN BMDs Scarborough, St Mary's
« on: Wednesday 29 August 07 16:28 BST (UK) »

I haven't put this in the look up offers as I do not know how long I will have this in my possession, but I have a notebook with all SEDMAN BMDs extracted from the St Mary's Church PRs in Scarborough.

If anyone would like me to look up their SEDMANs in here I shall be pleased to do so!

Oh dear, Emma - you HAVE opened a can of worms now!  :D

The resident 'expert' on Sedmans in this area is Ticker - he even has his own website - but he hasn't been heard of on here since early July, and he hasn't responded to any pms or even on his own website.

Anyway, here's the ones that I'm interested in ...

Thomas Sedman, farmer - no dates, but possibly born about 1805 - he is listed as father on son Thomas' wedding certificate to Elizabeth Holgate in 1860

Robert c1825-1907 (father Thomas) b. Hawsker/Oskar (sic)
Thomas 1831-1838 (father Thomas, and brother of Robert) b. Hawsker/Oskar (sic)

Elizabeth (nee Holgate) I believe died 1910, aged 71 (wife of Thomas b.1831) b. Thornton Dale

Mary E. b.1864
Margaret b.1864
Louisa b.1866
John b.1871
Ada b.1874
Albert b.1878
Ernest b. & d. 1881 (I think he's part of this family!)
ALL CHILDREN OF THOMAS AND ELIZABETH and born in Scarborough, but I can't find marriages or deaths for any of 'em!

Can't seem to find your Thomas or Robert. Only baps close are:

Jul 12 1837 Thomas son of John and Elizabeth Sedman, farmer's servant

Dec 21 1835  Thomas son of Henry and Rachel Sedman, Grocer.

These can't be yours as the father isn't Thomas in either case.

Did find these though:

Louisa, dau of Thomas and Elizabeth sedman, Cab man
Mary E., dau of Thomas and Elizabeth Sedman, Cab man
Margaret, dau of Thomas and Elizabeth sedman, cab man
all baptised Jan 5 1868

jan 14 1872
John, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Sedman, Cab man

jan 16 1876
Ada, dau of Thomas and Elizabeth Sedman, Horstler

(same day a KIT sedman baptised to Thomas and Elizabeth Sedman, Horstler though doesn't say whether dau or son!)

Jan 13 1878
Albert, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Sedman, Ostler

Nov 28 1881
Ernest, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Sedman, Ostler

Nov 9 1896

Jacob Snowden = Margaret Sedman

No other marriages, I only have upto 1900 so all others must be after that time.

Hi again Emma!

Yes - Thomas Sedman b.1831 was indeed an ostler/cab driver/cab proprietor in all the censuses that I can see him.

Thanks for the spot of the Margaret Sedman marriage and the Ernest death - he MUST be ours.

And yes - there WAS a Kit Sedman; it was Christopher, and HE is my father's link to the Sedmans; he is Dad's grandfather Sedman (mother of Dad's mother, Doris Sedman b.1901).

THAT'S why I'm chasing Sedmans.

As for the rest, I already knew those baptism dates; it was really marriages and deaths which I was hoping for some clues with - and you've at least given me a couple to ponder!

Thanks again.

Sorry I couldn't find anything else for you!

Did your ROBERT (Thomas's brother) come to Scarborough at all??

Did your ROBERT (Thomas's brother) come to Scarborough at all??

Hi again Emma.

Yes - he did, viz ...

1871 census: living at the house of Edward Abram and family, an agricultural labourer, in Scalby, Scarborough, Yorks (RG10/4818 Folio 105 Page 8 )
1881 census: living at Killerby Hall, Cayton, Scarborough, North Yorks. in the household of Thomas Ellis. (RG11/4801 Folio: 117 Page: 1)
1891 census: living at 6 Fish Yard, St. Thomas Street, Scarborough, Yorks. (RG12/3965 Folio: 35, Page: 65) with Thomas Sedman (brother) and family.
1901 census: living at 6 Fish Yard, St. Thomas Street, Scarborough, Yorks. (RG13/4531 Folio: 54  Page: 46) He is staying with his sister-in-law after her husband's death in 1898
1907 Possible death - Aged 83, December quarter, Scarborough, volume 9d page 249

I'm not sure about the death - it SEEMS to be OK, but I can't be certain, but as you've said your book only goes up to 1900, it won't cover this death.

I was just asking as I'd seen a marriage just below that of your Thomas and Elizabeth for

ROBERT SEDMAN, widower = MARY JANE PEARSON
mar 19 1870

Maybe not yours but I'll throw it in for good measure!!

Did your Thomas have any children by his first wife? (I'm getting nosy now!! :))
