William Moss Ironmonger of Carmarthen
« on: Thursday 30 August 07 06:45 BST (UK) »
Dear list,

Does anyone know where William Moss c 1771 ironmonger of Guildhall Square Carmarthen was born?  In Pigots of 1822 William Moss is listed as an auctioneer of Guildhall Square.     He died on the 3rd March 1851.     According to the 1841 census he was not born in county.    His widow Ann was there in 1851 and she was born in county she died in 1854.

with thanks
Diana

Dear Welsh Lady,

Thank you so much for all  that information on the  Moss family.    That is great.       It all helps build up  the picture.     I wish William had lived to the 1851 census!!

thank you again

If you google Cambrian Index Online its an old south Wales newspaper and put in Moss quite a bit comes up on your family you can actually purchase full copies of the entries (an extract appears on page)for a small fee have done so myself. This might help in your search for Williams birthplace.I cant find Williams marriage in Carms .Ann is from Carms so would assume they married there,Im off out now will look again later

Thank you Welsh Lady,

I do have the information for the Moss family on the Cambrian Index but I still cannot find a marriage!    I try to get a friend to look on the 1851 census and see if there is a birthplace for Ann and perhaps I can then find a marriage

thanks again for your help

Dear Welsh lady,

I have just found Ann Moss on the 1851 census widow of William Moss, ironmonger.    It says Llandovery as her birth place but I still cannot find the marriage.   All the children born St. Peters Carmarthen.

thanks again for your help

I have Carmarthenshire marriages on disc from 1754-1837 and they didnt marry in Carms.Usually they married in the brides parish but doesnt look like they did.One of their childrens second names is Mansell and another was Griffiths a possibly clue sometimes to mothers maiden name. But which one Mansell or Griffiths?

Dear Welsh Lady,

Now it is interesting that there are Griffiths from Kidwelly on my other side of the family and I think they are tied up with the Mansell family as well but not on this side - they are on my William/s from Llanelly!

I will try on the family search IGI to see if I can find anything that matches - Moss and Mansell are unusual names in Wales so I may get fortunate and find them.

with thanks again
