Audley surname pre 1837
« on: Saturday 01 September 07 21:00 BST (UK) »
Can anybody help?
I am trying to find as many references to the surname ‘Audley’ and its spelling variants in Cheshire before 1837.

The reason for this request is that I have traced the history of 4 Audley families in Liverpool. One of these families moved from Shotwick in Cheshire to Liverpool around about 1800.  I know there is another ‘Audley’ family in the Nantwich area of Cheshire. My aim is to link the ‘Audley families in Liverpool to the Audley family in Nantwich, if there be such a link.

To date I have references to Audleys in Cheshire at the following locations in Cheshire mainly from census information:

·   Capesthorne & Siddington (surname Audley/Aidley/Adley) 25 references pre 1837
·   Congleton (surname may be Hardley, info from census data) 1 reference pre 1837
·   Kingsley (surname Aidley/ Audley, info from census, this family my have originated at Gawsworth or Marton, depending upon which census one believes) there are 3 references in Gawsworth Parish Registers to the surname Adderley.
·   Over & Winsford 1 reference pre 1837
·   Over Peover (surname Auldley)1 reference pre 1837
·   Nantwich  many references pre 1837
·   Shotwick 3 references pre 1837
·   Weaverham 3 references pre 1837

The fact that I have referred to a particular parish does not mean I have all the information from that parish.

To date I have found the following variant spellings of ‘Audley:

·   Adley (It seems that within Cheshire Adley; Aidley; and Audley were interchangable.)
·   Adderley
·   Aidley(It seems that within Cheshire Adley; Aidley; and Audley were interchangable.)
·   Auldley
·   Andley (this is usually an error by somebody doing a transcription)
·   Audeley
·   Audly
·   Audsley
·   Auldeley
·   Handley
·   Hurdley

I would greatly appreciate any references to any Audley or variant of that surname pre 1837. All references would help, birth, baptism, marriage, death, burial, or monumental inscription or any other occasion. Please do not include any census information or info from the GRO indexes.
Many thanks in anticipation of your help

Have looked in the I.G.I on family search? if you just typ in Audley.A county in Englad, its quicker my county or you will get hundreds ;D you can do it by B.M.D (all) but that takes longer as well and only a certain ammount of name can be viewed. You should get every spelling under the sun on there ;D

Hi Celia,
I have already looked at the IGI. My understanding that the coverage of the IGI in Cheshire is poor compared to other counties and therefore I was hoping to get information from Parishes that are not covered in the IGI.

Hi JuJu,
Many thanks for that. Unfortunately it is not the link I need. Mary Audley and  Christopher Wetherhead had 5 daughters all with the surname Wetherhead and hence it is not a route for the Audley surname moved from Nantwich to Liverpool.

I know Mary had 6 brothers 6 sisters perhaps one of them was the route. Unfortunately I do not know the late history of all her brothers.

The link is somewhere waiting to be found.
Thanks for your help
