415,Mansfield Road,Nottingham.
« on: Sunday 02 September 07 19:43 BST (UK) »
Does anybody please have knowledge of the Mansfield Road area of Nottingham? I have somebody's occupation as "governess" in the 1930's at
415,Mansfield Road (Sherwood?) Nottingham but have been unable to find out what sort of establishment it was,or if it still exists.
Need to follow this trail,so any help would be appreciated.   Zola.

If you have a census for 1931 (not sure how you got that?) surely it tells you what the "governesses" boss did he should be head of house. Were there children in the house at the time fairly tricky to be a governess if no children around!! If you put Mansfield Road into Google it brings up a fairly rich area in the late 1800s, but now mainly shops and hotels. Pevsner even visited to view the Lodge.

Thanks Larkspur, It wasn't a 1931 census(I should be so lucky!) but a marriage certificate from the 1930's.I understand there are now two flats at number 415 but not sure if they are modern or a conversion of the original property.
I now have information that it may have been a vicarage or something similar.I am 150 miles from Nottingham so have to ration my visits these day but I will check the electoral rolls eventuallly if no definite information comes my way.

Many  thanks  Robin, I think you have solved that puzzle. My only clue was a marriage certificate from the late 1930s in the presence of......Rev E.Mervyn
Blow. Will now try to follow up his family to find the next move as can find no evidence of my  lady after that date.    Zola.

Hi Zola
Who are you looking for? They may be in the 41 Directory?

Hi Robin, the lady I am looking for was a Richardson and had married a Blick by
1941,so may not be on there. Not sure if she would be on the electoral roll either.
She was in her late 20s,but not sure what the qualifications were at that time
to be able to vote.I appreciate your help so far.   Zola.

Hi Zola

The only reference to Blick is 1925. There is a Typewriter Manufacturer of that name in Bridlesmith Gate, City Centre.

Hi Zola

I can't tell from your profile where you are but at least you have said 150 miles from Nottm. It's not much help to you that in 1913-14 415 Mansfield Rd Revd Thomas M Rees United Methodist, and that this is between Watcombe Road and Bingham Road.

This does not identify whether this is a private house or other. This area of Nottingham is a main road out of the City to the north city and then the boroughs going up towards Mansfield (North Notts). It is an area of Victorian houses with some converted into small hotels.

From the replies you have had so far it looks as though it is something to do with the UnitedMethodist church. This is very confusing when I search on the web.

I will be going in that vague direction on Monday and could take a diversion and look for 415. This still won't tell you what it was in the 1930's. If you contact Nottm archives they will be able to tell you what it was in that particular year.
