Hi
Have you got the birth details for Ann who is also 2 in that census?    If there isn't 9 months between them then that will make it clear that she cannot be their daughter.
Checking the local church records might produce baptisms which could solve the problem too.
You say you have the only birth certificate for Hannah Williams but at that time it was not compulsory to register births ( not until 1874 I think) so other avenues, such as the church registers are very important.
As she was brought up by the family it is possible that she accepted them as parents, hence the naming of Abel on her marriage certificate, as she was so young when they took her on.   I wonder if she is an illegitimate child of one of Abel's sisters as Philip says?
Writing to the local register office might be a good move too.  They are usually very helpful and sometimes come up with entries that have never reached the main GRO office.

Thank you Phillip :)

I too thought it would be best to try and find Abel Williams parents first, as little  Hannah has the Williams surname.

I felt the need of someone more experienced than me to agree though, because I wasn't sure which way to approach the search :-\

Hi Sillgen,

In the 1861 census Abel and Hannah have increased there daughter Ann's age by a year, hopefully it wasn't done to make the girls look like sisters.... but he had also given incorrect ages in the 1841 making his other children look like twins too ::)

I didn't realise that compulsory registration wasn't brought in until about 1874, thank you for the tip, as I assumed it was 1837.
Hannah must have thought Abel and Hannah were her parents to have put his name on her marriage cert details...I wonder if she was ever told.

You and Phillip have given me plenty of ideas to think about...thank you both.

Hi again
The correct reference for the 1851 is 2476 778 18
Having looked at it I am not convinced it says niece.   When the enumerator writes Nephew later on the page he uses a capital N - the spelling is also very wayward!   Could it be a shortened version of nurse - implying that she is a nurse child?   Just a thought.  I also think that Abel's birth place starts Blea....  but I must admit I can't find anything similar on the map.

Hi silligen,

That's the same ref as I have for the 1851  :-\

I didn't have a clue what (nesa  ???) meant but believe it means niece in Welsh, bit strange that the Welsh for Nephew wasn't used....worth a second check just in case.

Abel's birth place changes over the years, hopefully it isn't going to cause a problem but I think I have seen the name Bleatherston mentioned somewhere.

Thanks...Ambers :)

You have 2474 - only two digits out!     Took me some time to find the correct image so I thought I would correct it for others.   Never thought of them writing anything in Welsh....  Does that happen on other pages?   I did look at a couple but didn't see another one.

Hi Andrea,

I do apologise and thank you for changing it for me.....each time I re-checked it I saw read it as 4 not a 6 on my copy ::)

I did ring Pembrokeshire records Office to enquire about Parish Records...£15.00 per hour search fee.
The lady didn't know the meaning of the word... nesa.... either, have to admit I just accepted it when I was told it meant niece.
I haven't seen it on other Welsh census either, maybe someone will come along soon and confirm the meaning, one way or another.
