Maxton of Perthshire & elsewhere
« on: Tuesday 04 September 07 23:55 BST (UK) »
Hi folks,
I've been researching all known Maxton(e) lines for many years & have lotsa top-down trees from c. 1600s to c. 1900, but few 20th cent families to hang on the branches.

Any Maxtons or descendants out there?

Rob

Hi there,
I am very interested in your Maxton's of Perthshire thread.
I don't have any Maxton's [surname] in my family ancestry, but I do have a lot of Maxton's [christian name].

The first Maxton in the family is my gt gt gt grandmother's brother Alexander Maxtone Harvie, born in Fowlis Wester, Perth, Scotland.  I have always wondered whether the name Maxtone came from the surname of another ancestor?

However, Maxton was the first and second name given to many family members down through the generations.

Here are some details of this particular family.
I have often wondered if Alexander's middle name of Maxtone, was possibly the maiden surname of his mother?

Hi Paddy,

Rev. Alexander Maxtone was minister at Fowlis Wester at the time, so I can be pretty sure your Harvie was named after the baptiser.......I've seen similar namings several times.

As it happens, Fowlis Wester is the root parish for all Maxtons, who owned an estate in the parish, Cultoquhey.  I've seen their tenants give a middle name of Maxtone to their kids as well, but in this case, it has to be the minister; no Alexanders in the contemporary main Maxton line.

Hi Rob,
This is fascinating information for our family as Alexander Maxton were the first and second names given to 3 generations of our family and Maxton has been used as a first or middle name of family members in every generation since 1817.

I don't suppose you have a photo of this Rev. Alexander Maxtone?   :)
No, I expect not.

Thanks again for this wonderful snippet.

Kind regards
Paddy

Sorry Paddy,
Bit early for pics. Alexander died in 1851.......Huge gravestone in Fowlis Wester kirkyard though.

A letter of his survives in the Maxtone of Cultoquhey papers in National Archives of Scotland:-

GD155/989
Letters to Anthony Maxtone of Cultoquhey from Sir C. Sharp, Sunderland, and Alexander Maxton, minister at Fowlis, regarding the query by Sharp, on behalf of a friend who was publishing a history of the county of Durham, as to whether Anthony Maxton, prebendary of Durham (ord. 1609 and d. c. 1641) had been a member of the Cultoquhey family. Copy reply.
 21 Sep-12 Oct 1830

18 pages of his testaments at Scotlandspeople as well. No kids, but owned estates of Ardbennie & Redford, which went to his spinster sisters then were left to the Cultoquhey Maxtones, despite there being no proveable genealogical link between them.

Hope this helps,

Rob
