Enquiring how to go about looking up obituaries in Leighton Buzzard? My Great Grandfather Thomas Hedges ROGERS died 16.9.1894 and G. Grandmother Eliza ROGERS died 21.4.1908. Hoping someone can advise how I can do this research from NZ.  regards, Margaret.

Margaret

Bedfordshire Arcives have copies of the Leighton Buzzard Observer which would cover the period Thomas died...there seems to be a gap about 1908 'though.

Obits were quite rare unless the deceased were local dignatories etc?

There is a Leighton Buzzard History Society online that you may like to contact too?

The 19th C trade directories are online [search: ''Historical Directories'']

cathy
Bedfordshire: Worker [Flitton]; Ames [Kempston]; Manton [Kempston]; Morris [?]; Valentine [Kempston]; Two & Osborn [Cranfield]

Herfordshire and West London: Brown [Kent in early 19th C]; Blackwell.
McCarthy [Clonakilty, County Cork - searching for needles in the haystack!] and LOSTY [Dublin]

Hi Kathy,
Many thanks for this information.  Probably won't be worth looking for a obituary then - if only for local dignitaries. Looking at the Bedford Archives I did find a Apprenticeship Agreement for my family. regards, Margaret.

  Hello Margaret...

I had another look up to do in the newsarchive in the library so thought I would look to see if I could find anything about Thomas for you.

  On 18 Sept 1894 newpaper.

Deaths....Thomas Hedges Rogers age 73 of Billington Rd.

  Also this ......

" Last week we gave an account of the finding of the body of Harry Richardson Richardson who formally kept the Grey Hound Leighton Buzzard, in the Ouse at St Neots. On Sunday Mr Rogers og Billington Rd & formally of the Bell & Woolpack the father of Mrs Richardson died."

I have photo copied the report from the previous week would you like me to send it to you?
Pm me your details if ok.

Thomas & his wife are both buried in the parish church yard so it maybe possible to find a head stone as well.

Hi Tazzie,
Forgot to mention in my PM that thank you for offering to look for Headstone of Thomas & Eliza but  I already have a photo of their headstone that my cousin from NZ took about 15 years ago.
Really exciting news about the newspaper report. regards, Margaret.
