Hi Jan,

I've recently transcribed some parish registers for the Dorset Family History Society and have that exact entry:

Martha d.o. Jno & Mary Hawkins 26 November 1749 at Shipton Gorge.

Can never work out why John is "shortened" to Jno!

Thank you, that clarifies he was John. I agree the shortening to Jno is weird - maybe to do with Latin ???
