George SMITH - 1901 census - further information
« on: Friday 07 September 07 09:29 BST (UK) »
I have found George SMITH b. abt. 1872 in Tamworth on 1901 census at:

9 Orchard Street, Aberdeen Old Machar; ED: 2; Line: 18; Year: 1901

His wife is Elizabeth who judging from others on the page may previously have been married to a Mr RAE.

I have a George Thomas SMITH in my tree born in Tamworth abt. 1872 and I am wondering if this is him.

Are there any easily accessable records I could use the find out more about the George in Aberdeen to check this out?

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Pinetree

Just some suggestions on how to verify if this is the George you are looking for. You could look at the birth certs. of one of the two daughters showing in 1901 on Scotlands People.  This would include when and where the parents married. If they married in Scotland, again Scotlands People should have their marriage cert. which would include their parents' names. This hopefully would let you verify if it is the correct George.

The only thing that worries me about the 1901 Census is that George's occupation is down as a 'retired hotel keeper' - unusual for a 29yr old.

Regards.

How very interesting:

Bessie and Bella appear on the same page of the birth registrations- ? as twins  :-\

3 Oct 1897,  Douglas Arms Hotel, Banchory (Banchory Ternan)

Bessie Watson Smith - 9 am and Isabella Evan*-Neich Smith - 9.03 am  *or Swan - difficult to make out!

Parents - George Thomas Smith, Hotelkeeper and Elizabeth previously Rae, m.s. Watson.

Marriage date is given as Nov 6 1896, Banchory.

I'll check this out for you  :)

I used to live around the corner from Orchard Street  8)

The marriage (date as below, in the Douglas Arms Hotel, Banchory) shows that George Thomas Smith, 26, was a coachman (domestic servant). His parents were David Daniel Smith, hostler and Sophia m.s. Simmonds, both deceased.

Elizabeth was a widow and Hotelkeeper - so he married into the hotel business  :)

Monica and Gadget,

Thank you both for your replies.

I ventured onto ScotlandsPeople but didn't have the same success as Gadget  :-[  and what a result,

this is my George - his father was actually Daniel SMITH but his mother was Sophia SIMMONS so must be him!   ;D

Thank you so much for your wonderful help - this is my first Scottish connection  :D

Oops  :-[

On closer inspection - like blown up to 200% - it is Daniel!

Hope you've got them by now  :D

Do you need anything on any of the children or ancestors of Elizabeth Watson?

Thanks again Gadget.

Just "googled" the Douglas Arms Hotel and it is still going strong.

No sign of his death in Aberdeen  :(

I'm just wondering about WW1. Have you tried the WW1 medals or does your family know what happened to him?

Thanks for looking Gadget.

Sadly, I don't have any family information on him.  WW1 is a good suggestion I'll look into that.

I managed to find David Davidson RAE's birth on ScotlandsPeople that identified Elizabeth's first husband as George RAE.  I also found George RAE's death certificate and there is an 11 page Will for him which I think I might get just out of interest.

I couldn't seem to track down the image for the family on 1901 census though.  I tried all sorts of the details from the Ancestry transcription but kept getting 0 results - not sure what I was doing wrong  ???

All the best
