1891 census- Shaw in Loscoe
« on: Wednesday 12 September 07 01:31 BST (UK) »
Hello
Can I please request a lookup for family of Shaw in Loscoe- Ellen born c 1836, Eliza b c 1863, George b c1866 and Robert b c 1868.  In 1881 they were with Ellen's mother Rebecca but she died in 1883.  Then in 1901 Ellen is with Robert but listed as aunt rather than mother so looking for a link to determine if one of her siblings was the mother rather than Ellen.
Thanks, Carmel

Hi Carmel

1891 shows Ellen as head of Household and Robert as nephew.  Both are unmarried and the only ones in the house.

Cheers

The 1871 is not much help either :-  Robert and Rebecca, daughters Ellen and Ann, grandchildren Robert, James George and Eliza.

Thanks again Karenlee.  Yes it is a problem one.  Would be easier with a not so common name but trying to find possible marriages etc on Free BMD doesn't help and the Loscoe area doesn't seem to be on familysearch.  Is James also a Shaw in 1871?  I have James Baker grandson (child of Elizabeth) with them in 1861 but there were 5 daughters and Elizabeth is only one I have marriage details for so they could be children of any of other 3 or Elizabeth reverted to maiden name.
Best Wishes, Carmel

In 1871 they all have SHAW as a surname.  Do you have them in 1861 or earlier?

Yes 1861 I have
Robert  57 Rebecca  56
Elizabeth Baker daur M 28
Helen Shaw daur U 25
Ann Shaw daur U 22
Fanny Shaw daur U 18
James Baker Grandson 3
 and 1851
Robert and Rebecca with Elizabeth 18, Ellen 15, Ann 13 and Frances 9
so all having Shaw name means they could all be Elizabeth's children so I'll look for births under Baker unless the James in 1871 is a different James but if age abt 13 then probably him.

Yep, James is 13 on the 1871.  Birth about 1858 then.  Could well be him.

I have an instance in 1881 where the grandchildren were staying over, and were transcribed as GREEN - the grandparents surname. - when in fact their surname was WHICKER.  Took some untangling that one did.
