Killarney Genealogical Centre
« on: Wednesday 19 September 07 23:07 BST (UK) »
Like most of the Rootschatters here, my research would be greatly helped by the opening of the promised centre in Killarney. I started my search about 3 years ago and it was supposed to open in 2004. I decided to write to Jackie Healy Rae TD following his success in the last election. I just got a really nice letter from him saying he has made representations to Minister John Gormley concerning the Killarney Genealogical Centre. Maybe if we all emailed /wrote to/hounded the Minister, we might get a result. As far as I know most of the records have been put onto the database. All that is needed is the final funding to get it up and running. Heres hoping.......

If it's anything like other genealogical centres in the rest of Ireland they will then charge a large amount of money for a small amount of information.

Hear, hear!! Aghadowey is correct about the charging a large amount of money for a bits.

I know this because it did happen to me.

It is such a shame that Ireland do not have the LROs like England & Wales do.

Your best bet would be to contact the local parish priest or clergyman to see if they would be most kind to look up in the Registers for you providing you give them a donation.

How about a trip to National archives  in Dublin and looking up the details yourselves?

All you pay is a few euro for a reader card.

I think the main difference is that Killarney will have everything on a searchable database. National Archives are still using microfilm. Hopefully, a search in Killarney will be much quicker.

Thats true....but a fee of at least 75 euro is a bit much .

I enjoy researching at record offices using a fiche...... If you know the parish it won't take too long.

If you don't know the parish how do you know you have the right ancestor?

I have searched the parish records extensively and taken everything from them that I could. My problem is that my family seem to have moved around Kerry for work. I thought it might make life easier if I could check all parishes in one go. But at €75 I wouldn't be doing it too often. Very expensive form of research !
