Where is Dewhurst, Wilpshire?
« on: Saturday 22 September 07 20:58 BST (UK) »
Can someone assist in locating Dewhurst, Wilpshire. It was a farm from apprx 1840 to at least 1915 in/around Wilpshire which is just to the north of Blackburn. I lived in Wilpshire for 10 years so I know the area well and have tried to locate Dewhurst on "old maps" website and other map sites but with no luck  :'(

A google hasn't pinpointed the exact site.

It was owned by an Ainsworth family for most of the 19th century - it that helps?

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

Hi Ian,

Just took a look at the enumerator route for 1891 census.  Lanehead Farm,
Sharples Farm, Briers Farm Tippings Farm then DEWHURST.

Ah think I found it on the Mario Maps except I had to to zoom out when I found Tippings Farm.  It is due north from Tippings and marked as Dewhurst House. Must be there somewhere if it was not the actual house.

I will have another look at a different year.

Regards,
Mo

Hi Ian,

Now checked three different census years and they all point towards it being what is now Dewhurst House.  There are no seperate references to a Dewhurst House in Wilpshire on the census street indexes for Wilpshire just  the "Dewhurst" where you Ainsworths were.

I have the Lancashire A-Z year 2000 edition, and Dewhurst House is still marked on that - just off Longsight Rd (A59), to the west of the Whalley Rd/Longsight Rd roundabout, if that makes sense (I'm not a driver).
Would send you an image of it but my scanner does not talk to the puter & the kids have nicked my camera batteries, grr.  >:(
Try google-mapping: Dewhurst Rd, Langho, Blackburn

That's solved then! I was looking in what I thougt was Wilpshire district but not in what is called Langho in 2007!

Thanks for all your help,
Ian
