Hi hartland,

It could be that either whoever filled in his details thought that was where he was born, or, if his family had moved when he was very young he might have thought he was born in Stafford, but it was actually in the Dudley area.

Another option is that his birth was not registered.

I think that people in Birmingham would know that Dudley was in Worcestershire so I don't think it really fits very well.
Any chance that you have John's father's name and occupation from the marriage certificate? That might make it possible to see where they were in 1871.

Thanks for your input  Nanny Jan, Gardener and T Hawkesley.
On my G/parents wedding certificate John's Father is also John, occupation  Brass Caster. john and Ada were married in St. Judes church Birmingham,  the address on the certificate is 15 Essex st. Birmingham, but that address is stated for both of them.   I've looked at the 1871 census without much luck.

Hello Hartland,

As Nanny Jan has already said:- "It could be that either whoever filled in his details thought that was where he was born, or, if his family had moved when he was very young he might have thought he was born in Stafford, but it was actually in the Dudley area".

On the 1901 census there is a John & Ada Baldwin, plus children, living in Ryder Street, Birmingham.  John's occupation is Tube Trade (drawer) and it's stated that he was born in Birmingham.  If you want the details just let me know.

Being born and brought up in Dudley before my marriage, Dudley has never been, as far as I am aware, been in Staffordshire, always Worcestershire and now West Midlands.

Dudley Castle was always said to be in Staffordshire; the Castle surrounded by Worcestershire and Worcestershire surrounded by Staffordshire.

Thanks Lupo,    If the 1901 details are at  64 Ryder street i have those, but i missed the fact of John being born in Birmingham.  I was going to send for a birth certificate, but i'm not sure which birth place to put down. Regards
