Unfortunately, unlike for England, Scotland and Wales, there is no 1841 available for Ireland. Do you have any other clues...perhaps you could post a picture of the writing on the 1871 for folks to ponder.

Where was James living when the census was taken? am wondering if it is 'Down Shire Ireland' but should be Co. Down.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I had wondered about it saying Down Shire too, aghadowey, from welshpencers original transcription, but now having seen the entry itself, I am not as certain. Perhaps some samples of writing from other parts of the census page would assist in trying to decipher the handwriting.

Hi all

when the census was taken James was living in Huddersfield.  and is in the 1851 census so must have come over prior that. but gives belfast in that one and Ireland in others.

Have put some more samples up

Thankn you

Russ

Hi Russell,

Promptly replying 16 years after your initial post! Hope you are still on to receive this.
James McMillan is my GGG Granddad. In 1851 he was living at 3 Swan Yard, Huddersfield. He was married with two kids and was a tailor.

Happy to provide any other info I have.

Regards

Rob
