Boot of Belper, 1841
« on: Wednesday 03 October 07 08:52 BST (UK) »
Hi, can anyone help please? My husband's mum's side were Boot and lots of them seemed to come from Belper. His great great grandparents were Samuel and Lydia (nee Jennison) and they lived in North Terrace in 1881. Samuel's father is Joseph Boot born c1798 in Belper and he has 3 brothers, William c1802, George, c1806 and Samuel c1808 and a sister Ann c1804, all born in Belper. Their parents, I believe, are Joseph Boot and Mary (nee Walker) This is all the info I have on the latter, not sure where they were born or even when. Can anyone enlighten me please, we are up in Derbyshire the end of this month and hope to do some looking around whilst there, graveyards etc.... many thanks

Oh i just realised this was the info I had got, sorry, I didn't really make myself very clear did i? It was Joseph's father I wanted, I had the information for Samuel's parents, joseph and Maria, I believe Joseph's father is also Joseph and his mum is Mary Walker, they also had other children, Joseph was born 1798 (ish) and William 1802, Ann 184, George 1806 and Samuel 1808, obviously Joseph and Mary would probably be alone by 1841 if they were still alive, I think Joseph may have been born in 1766 or there abouts. Thanks for the info anyway, as I didn't know where Maria had been born,

Hi Mintola,
The oldest Church in Belper is St. Johns, very few graves have survived and I cannot
see any Boot in the M.I's.

St. Peters burials from 1825 - some stones

Belper Cemetery - be warned Amber Valley Council will no longer let
the staff at the Cemetery assist you with your search
in this  large Cemetery.  You need to contact the
Council with details of who you know is in the Cemetery
they then produce you a map of how to find the grave.
for the sum of £30 all this prior to your visit.
Burials also took place in Duffield Church, again few stones have survived.
There are of course independent churches with some stones surviving.

The row of stone cottages North Terrace, Chesterfield Road, Belper are all
still there and just as they were built.
Fri, Sat & Sunday - Belper North Mill is open from 1pm to 5pm so you can
see the history of the Cotton Industry where some of your ancestors worked.
This is the connection to the School Registers - there is at least one Boot
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/Belper/index.html

Heritage Weekend 20th & 2st October - when the Unitarian Chapel is open
Screening of the Samuel Slater Film - Hero or Traitor on the Sunday at Strutt School lots of other events.
Hope you enjoy your visit.

thank you for that information, I found a lovely website all about Belper that listed some baptisms too, so will trawl through as much as possible before the end of the month. It looks a lovely place and I'm really looking forward to it now!! Thanks again
