Are any of these lads your relative?
« on: Wednesday 03 October 07 17:27 BST (UK) »
I have an album that was owned by my 'Great Aunt' from when she was a VAD in the Barrack Hospital, Ashton Under Lyne, most are dated 1915.

There are ditties, drawings, accounts of their war so far or just a signature, depending on what the soldier wanted to write.

I am transcribing the name, rank, number and regiment where they have written them and a ? denotes I can't read it too well.  If anyone recognises a name as theirs I will send you a transcription and photograph of the relevant page.

I'm just hoping someone who has got a name on the list sees it!

It's great actually reading them.  If I get chance I might transcribe a couple on this thread just for the interest.  :)

Madpants,
Lost for words, the list is amazing and that tantalising page of the album is just so fantastic. Obviously your great aunt cared deeply for her charges and you are keeping that tradition alive. Unfortunately I do not know the names of the people I am looking for except that the fatalities were recorded at Gorton Monastery but the memorial stolen or vandalised. I have no idea about the casualties who may be included in your Grt aunts album, but they well be there.

Will resume the Mallalieu hunt when location of plot comes through.

Best wishes
Tony

Madpants - great list, pity that my Dad ain't on it.  Have you thought of posting it on the Great War Forum?   http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/

Tony, I thought the name Mallalieu rang a bell when I read it and it does.  Henry (Harry) Mallalieu was a pal of my Dad's in Spotland Rochdale.  They were both in the CLB at St Clements and (I think) joined up together with a few other blokes - their numbers were pretty close. Dad's was C/516 and Harry's C/515. They also were in the same CLB football team of which I have a photo.  I hope after all that that he is one of yours.

Let me know.

Hi Bob,
He's not one of mine. He's one of Madpants Mallallieus from Mossley :) Close enough to be of interest though :)
