Peterborough 1881 look up - Partridge
« on: Tuesday 21 December 04 23:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I cannot find any entries anywhere, on 1881 census for either John Partridge (& wife Ann & family members) including son Frederick William (my great grandfather & grandfather respectively). They are found on both 1871 & 1891 census living in Peterborough in the St Marks area.  Why might they be missed from 1881 ? Any help appreciated. Thanks John Partridge.

John

Is this the right family in 1871? Is dad John born in Sharnbrook?
I've hunted high and low for them in 1881 and they seem to have vanished :)
But I'll try again. On the actual image for 1871 it looks like Ann was born in Wealdstone, but that's not in Hunts! Wonderful transcription eh ::)

Ann Partridge 32  Hunts, Wentstence Wife  Peterborough St Mark  Northamptonshire
Arthur R D Partridge 4  Northse, Peterborough Son  Peterborough St Mark  Northamptonshire
Fredk Wm Partridge 7  Northse, Peterborough Son  Peterborough St Mark  Northamptonshire
John Partridge 46  Shambroke Head  Peterborough St Mark  Northamptonshire
Sarah A Partridge 2  Northse, Peterborough Daughter  Peterborough St Mark  Northamptonshire

All the best

Carol

Hi Carol 8353

Yes that JP is my great-grand-dad, born in Sharnbrook, Beds - although 1871 census says Shambroke ! At age 46 then, he was born 1825. Wife Ann was born in Woodston(e) Hunts - which my geography tells me is a few miles SW of Peterborough.   The 1891 census confirms both birth places.

If JP & family are recorded on 1871 census in Peterborough & also on 1891 census in Peterborough - why cannot I find any of them in 1881 census - on both the Ancestory & LDS sites

Is there any simple way to search 1881 census by address ? just in case names were transcribed incorrectly.

regards John P

Hello John

I'm afraid to say I cannot find them.I have tried every which way, from putting in all the Ann's married to John's living in Northants on family search.
To every John born Beds on Ancestry. I also tried looking up the neighbours in both 1871 and 1891 to see if I can pinpoint them and whilst I did indeed find all the neighbours and tried streetwalking through Peterborough for pages and pages on LDS site.

Your Partridges have flown I'm sorry to say. Maybe they won the lottery and went on a cruise or visited rellies in sunny Oz,or perhaps they just got missed off the 1881,(it must happen!)

What address where they at in 1880 when Frederick was born? Possibly the Nton or Peterborough record offices can offer some other suggestions.
Or try an lok up request with the heading '1881 look up address given'.
Some members have street indexes of censuses.

Hope you find them,

Happy Christmas  :D

Thanks for looking Carol -

Like you I've been checking each & every Partridge offspring by just their first name & year of birth, - but nothing found. I've looked by address -  JP & family are in St.Leonards St. (St. Marks) in 1871; and in Mayors Walk (St.John the Baptist) in 1891. Frederick is in lodgings in Russell St in 1891. I searched all these areas in 1881 but again no luck.

To recap in 1871, we have John & wife Anne, plus Frederick (born 1864), Arthur R 1867), & Sarah A (1869).  In 1891 we have more children, Mary L (1872), John T (1875), Jessie(1877) & Walter(1879), plus a grandson Sydney (born 1890). All are born in Peterborough so the family has nor moved.

Perhaps they were on their holidays abroad on census night, or their details have just got lost in the post.

Walter's birth certificate should tell me the address in 1879 - so thats my next step.

Also I found I could search Ancestry by Address - by typing the street name in the 'keyword' prompt - you need to know census piece number you want to search, otherwise you get loads. Also it will produce a lot of results if your street name is also a first/surname. ie Russell Street will return people with first names or surnames of Russell.

Topic Update.  From birth certs of John's children (latest being Walter in 1878) the family was living in Westgate, Peterborough. I assume this is the area, rather than say Westgate Street which also exists. I've re checked 1881 - but still no luck. Not having an entry in 1881 census prevents me from logging my ancestors on the Lost Cousins site.  Any further suggestions welcome  ???

John

They just ain't there, are they  ??? I have again tried every Walter born 1878,but there is nothing even simliar.

Nope I'm afraid I just don't have any more suggestions.........ah just the one.
How about checking with the actual record office (is it Nton or do P'boro have their own?) and looking up parish registers maybe you could follow a pattern of baptisms and addresses.Poss even check with them if they know if any parts of 1881 is missing.

I think I've read somewhere that someone found a rellie at the local record office who just seemed not to exist on all the online stuff.

Sorry can't think of anything else.........maybe someone else can?
