need help with marriage.
« on: Friday 05 October 07 19:48 BST (UK) »
I am looking to confirm that the George Fowler who married Hannah Shinwell is the son of George Fowler and Jane Ewart.

George was born on the 5 Aug 1856 in Falkland Fife.On the 1871 census in Scotland he was staying with his parents and his occupation is Apprentice grocer. I then find him on the 1881 census in youlgreave, derby Occupation shopman. In the 1891 census  he is married to an Elizabeth who i think is his second wife and his occupation is Shopstore Manager.
In the 1901 census he is still in Youlgreave derby,Occupation Co-op shop manager.

I am convinced that this is the George fowler that I am looking for as the 1891 census say that is place of birth is Falkland Scotland, and there was only one Fowler family in Falkland.
So if some one has a chance to have a look at the parish records and she if his parents are mentiond I would be extremely greatfull.

Hi,
It certainly looks as if this is the same George Fowler, if  an apprentice in 1871 Scotland
Census he would finish apprenticeship as a Grocer aged 21 so about 1877.
Presume he then takes job with the Co-Operative Society, moving to Derbyshire.
He marries his first wife Hannah Shimwell Sept. Q 1883  Bakewell 7b 1109.
This is just prior to the birth of their first son Tom Dec Q 1883 Bakewell 7b 756,
second child is registered James Gilbert Fowler June Q 1885 Bakewell 7b 778.
Hannah dies 20th September 1886 aged 25.
2nd Marriage is to Elizabeth Birds Sep. Q 1889 Prestwich, Lancs  8d 420.
Elizabeth died 28.12.1918 aged 67
George died 26.7.1926 aged 70
Tom died 6.12.1944 aged 60
Gilbert died 4.5.1947 aged 62.
Note:-  Elizabeth Birds is dau of Thomas Birds and is on 1881 Census aged 29 u/m Youlgrave

You need to purchase one or both of the marriage certificates.

Hi Billy,

The references I gave you for each marriage can be found on:-
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
It is often quicker to apply to the individual registration District in your case
these are shown as Bakewell & Prestwich, you need to check if they are
still the Civil Registration Districts. Full details are on this site.
Bakewell is still the same and their contact details are:-
The Register Office, Town Hall, Bath Street, Bakewell, DE45 1BW.
Tel: 01629 812261.

This is also a site which explains about Civil Registration Certificates
http://www.dixons.clara.co.uk/Certificates/marriages.htm.

These records are not the same as Church Registers.
