Robert JUDD aka Irish Bob
« on: Sunday 07 October 07 11:47 BST (UK) »
Robert Judd, my 4 x G'father gives his birthplace as Co Tyrone, no parish or date but estimated c1780/90. Lived and married Boston Lincs until transported to Australia 1827, documents show his age as 41 (over several years !).  He is  my brick wall as cannot find any Judds in Tyrone.

Welcome to Rootschat. If he died in Australia is there any information on death certificate like names of parents, birthplace, etc.?

Distribution of the surname Judd indicates English origins:

(though does not necessarily mean that he wasn't born in Ireland).
If you can supply parent's names/occupations etc from Australian death (as suggested by aghadowey) or marriage certificates, the family may be able to be traced in England. (dates would be helpful too)

Robert Judd may well have been born in Ireland, even in Co. Tyrone, but since he was born so far before the start of civil registration (1864 for births, deaths & Catholic marriages, Protestant marriages from 1845) it will be difficult to find details about him if he was in Ireland. However, strange (but not impossible)he married in Lincolnshire if he was from Ireland. Think you really do need his parents' names to get any further.

Thanks for the replies to my enquiry. I have not been able to find any reference to his parents so guess I will have to consider calling a halt.

Do you have his death certificate or is it just that his parents, place of birth, etc. are not listed on his death certificate?

I have discovered that because of the hard conditions for Lincolnshire Agricultural labourers a number of them joined the army and went to keep the peace in Ireland.  Is there anywhere I can find out if a JUDD was one of them (Robert's father perhaps).  I haven't been able to find a death cert for Robert in Oz, apparently very unreliable documentation until late 1800s.
