Waycott Forge, Halvergate
« on: Sunday 07 October 07 16:59 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me with a puzzle?  I found the following document on the web:

http://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/broads/live/authority/meetings/planning-committee/2007/08-17/Halvergate_and_Tunstall_Conservation_Area_Document.pdf

Halvergate and Tunstall Conservation Area Character Statement, Broadland District Council, May 2007

It includes the following description of an area in Halvergate, on the edge of the Broads:

(ii) The Street (east)
This cluster includes Dawdy’s Farmhouse (but now
without its barn and associated farm buildings to
the east), Waycott Forge, two terraces of cottages,
the Old Post Office and its outbuildings (those to
its east now apparently no longer within its
curtilage.) and the Thatched Cottage (in
Wickhampton Road). The outbuilding to the Old
Post Office is important in the way it extends out
to the Street and provides, with Waycott Forge
opposite, a visual “pinch point”, separating the
traditional part of the Street from the modern
“suburban” development beyond.

It's the Waycott Forge I'm interested in.  It was my maiden name, and the subject of my One Name Study.  The name comes exclusively from Devon.  Several Waycotts were blacksmiths, and they did of course emigrate within England and abroad, but I have no evidence of any Waycott connection with Norfolk at all.

Does anyone know this area and know how the forge got its name?  Googling "Waycott Forge" or Waycott+Halvergate only brings up this document, which suggests a modern origin although it's obviously an historical building.  I'd be grateful for any help on this.   :)

Hi Maureen,

If you go onto a site called Gorleston Heritage, there are some local historians working on it and especially Dennis Durrant, this is fairly near Halvergate and I am sure they would be able to help you,

Good luck,

Thanks very much, Jakky, I'll follow that up.  I could also try the District Council too.
