Joseph Juicy Marriage Wooler c1820
« on: Monday 08 October 07 12:44 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the marriage of Joseph Juicy/Jowsey to Margaret c1820.

Joseph and Margarets children were christened at `United Presbyterian Cheviot Street-Nc, Wooler'.

I guess that this is Margarets Parish Church as Joseph was christened at nearby Chatton.

If someone were able to look up the marriage I would be most grateful.

Thanks :)

Nige,

According to Genuki http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/Wooler/ChurchRecords.html the Parish Church of Wooler is St Mary's not St. Margaret's.

This would not be the same as the United Presbyterian you mention, being two different denominations - Church of England and Presbyterian.

However, at about the time you quote it was illegal for marriages (apart from those of Jews and Quakers) to take place in a non-conformist church, such as the Presbyterian, (see http://www.northumberland.gov.uk/%5Cdrftp%5C1209.asp ) So although they and their children might have been baptised in a Presbyterian Church, they couldn't have been married in one.

Not much help in your search for their marriage I know, but the general information might be of interest to you!

Jennifer

I've been to Wooler as many of my Muckles were christened at the United Presbyterian Cheviot Street and it definitely isn't a parish church!

If you read through the history you may find that they nipped north over the border to get married. I haven't found any of my earlier marriages yet either.
Researching Muckles from Chatton, Ords from Bamburgh early 1800's, Fyalls originally from St Monans in Scotland, Troughtons - Cumberland to Tynemouth, Rollestones from Leicester & Old, Quarmans from Somerset

Thanks for the help so far.

I was sure that Joseph Juicy was christened at Chatton, but now I'm not so sure.

The non conformist marriage is going to need looking into, maybe there is a marriage over the border.

Thanks again for the help and links.

Nige :)

If I remember rightly there were lots of Presbyterian entries on the IGI for Juicy's in this area. Obviously they chose to worship there.
You may want to contact th elocal record office to see what records from the Presbyterian churches in the area have survived, and have a browse through them to piece your Juicy family together

Hi Nige

There is no entry in the Northumberland Marriage Index 1813 - 1837 for this couple.

Also there are no entries at all for JUICY/JOICEY/JOUSEY/JOWSEY marrying in Wooler.

No entry in the Irregular Marriages of the Berwick Advertiser 1808 - 1864.

My Lamberton Toll Marriages don't start until 1833.

Regards

Helen K
