Harriet Smith - Birth and Marriage Look up
« on: Wednesday 10 October 07 10:11 BST (UK) »
Hi
Is there anyone out there that can help me find information about Harriet Smith and her family.  She was born c.1838 in Hollington, Sussex.  Her father was called Benjamin Smith and I think her mother was called Sophia (Maiden name unknown).  I have found various census where Harriet  appears with her family.  She later married Sydney Charles Grubb at Clewer, Windsor, Berkshire.  Benjamin was born in the late 1700's.  I am also interested in his marriage to Sophia.  He was born in Crowhurst, Sussex.
I would love to hear from anyone who thinks they may have info.

Oh thats brilliant.  It sounds about right.  You are a darling.  I don't supposse you have birth records as well?  It would be great if we could link Harriet to this couple.
Cheers

Hi again

You state that Harriet was born c1838; but if this is the family on the 1851 census - it means she was born a bit later, about 1845.

Hi again Sarah

Ignore that last question - I was looking at the 1841 census, not the 1851 as stated.

So the information then does tie up with your known research and put Harriet in context with her family

Sorry about that, but I got it right in the end

Don't worry about it.  Scanning indexes can have that effect on you.  I am currently ripping my house apart looking for all my papers on the Smith's.  It looks like I'll have to reprint them.  I know on  the census you have sent me it looks like 2 lots of the children are twins but then that changes on the later census.

You wrote

This is the fault of the Census Enumerator - on the 1841 census only, he was given instructions to 'round down' everyones ages to the nearest 5 - but not that of children 14 or under. He obviously did not comply with that rule!

We all make mistakes.......me more than most I think.
I have just printed off the 1851 census as well.

Benjamin  aged 67
Sophia     aged 47
Rachel      aged 23
Hannah    aged 17
Thomas    aged 12
Joseph      aged 9

Harriet married 1859  so maybe she was off working somewhere.

I also have 2 deaths but again not sure if they are the correct people
Benjamin Smith burial 30 Dec 1860 aged 77. Place Hollington Description St Leonard.
Sophia Smith 25 April 1871 aged 67.  Place Hollington Description St Leonard.

I seem to remember finding a Sophia Smith in Battle Union Workhouse on the 1861 1871 census.  Again I need to try and check this info.
Thanks again for your help.
Sarah

Thanks for that info about rounding down the ages.  I've just read it.
