Searching the IGI - Advice Needed
« on: Wednesday 10 October 07 21:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am having a "grey moment" (I didn't have any until I let builders loose in my house three months ago, now I am having them permanently) so can I please pick your brains.

I have used a way on the IGI where if I put in "baptism" and "suggested dates" along with the parents names it will come up with the any children born to them.  I don't take these as gospel but it gives me a point to start from, the problem is I cannot remember how I've managed to do it previously.

Can sks help me.

Regards

Hi half pint :)

That's how I do it but remember not to put anything in the 'name' boxes - just the parents' full names, baptism, date +/- 5 years or whatever, British Isles. Country and county.

Hi Gadget

Many thanks for this.  I have just tried your suggestion and it worked but when I did it earlier, it bounced back on me.

If you select the IGI on the family search page - it allows you to specify a range of dates. if you do a parent search when you have selected "All resources" rather than just the IGI, it doesn't allow the date range - perhaps this was why you got the error.

Hi HP

Are you doing batch searches?

If you click on the batch number at the bottom of the page you get a new search window.  If you enter the surname and the father's name it will give you all children born to a father of that name in that parish within the dates of the batch.

Hope that makes sense!

Cheers

I find it more successful once I have found one child to use just the surname with the batch number dates and baptism.  This catches the variants of the spellings of the parents' christian names which your search will miss.

Admittedly you have to put up with all the cousins that it finds as well.
