Can anyone help me to find Mary Ann and James William DOWNER in censuses after 1861?
Mary Ann VICK married James William DOWNER just before the 1861 Census, and in that year, Mary Ann is shown living with her parents - John and Eliza VICK - in Lymington Hampshire. Mary Ann is described as "Wife Of A Ship Carpenter Absent At Sea."
Their first (only?) son, John William DOWNER, is shown as 12 days old.
The next mention I can find is John William, this time calling himself William John DOWNER, marrying Amelia MILLER in Lymington in the March Quarter of 1882.
I can't find any mention of Mary Ann or James in later censuses, however in 1881, William Downer is shown as living with his grandparents, named James and Mary DOWNER in Lymington. James is a retired farmer aged 76, and William a carpenter aged 20.
Using this information, I went back to the 1861 census, and there is James and Mary Downer, right ages, living in Lymington, with their son James William DOWNER, a shipwright. So it looks as if he wasn't at sea after all!
It would be very helpful to find either Mary Ann DOWNER (nee Vick) or her husband James William DOWNER in 1871 or, indeed, in either 1881 or 1891.
Can anyone help?
Kind regards
