1841-1871 Look-up request please :)
« on: Thursday 11 October 07 14:04 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm doing a bit of research into my aunts father (my mother's stepsister). Her great grandfather was a chap called William Shutt or Shute who according to the 1881 census was born in 1853 in Oswestry. He was in the Royal Marine's based in Devonport aboard the Impregnable. I'd quite liike to know who his parents were and if he had any siblings, so if someone wouldn't mind looking into this for me, I'd be very grateful
kind regards
Damien in Cornwall

Hi Damien,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

In 1871, he's a private on board the Princess Charlotte (Royal Navy) at Hong Kong.

I can't see an exact match in 1861 census unfortunatelu but here's a possible:

1861
RG9/1878 47 49
Oswestry, Shropshire
Arthur St

Benjamin Shut, head, 44, Groom, b. Shifnall
Martha, wife, 38?, b. Cheshire Chester
Henry, son, 16, Errand Boy, b. Shifnall
Elizabeth, dau, 14, b. do.
William, son, 12, scholar, b. do.
John, son, 8, scholar, b. do.
Emma, dau, 6, scholar, b. do.

Hi and welcome!

In 1891 he's in Tamar, Stoke Damerel, Devon,  40 years old and noted as "Married" servant domestic born Shropshire, Oswestry, I'm still trying to work out where he's working, seems to be a college of Marine Engineering.  Strange the enumerator's list doesn't mention it and I thought it would.

In 1901 he's at 50 Victory Street West, Stoke, Devonport, Devon
William Shutt Head M 50 Domestic Servant General Shropshire Oswestry
Elizabeth Wife M Cornwall Lostwithiel
Henry son S 23 Leading Seaman R.N. " "
Mabel daur S 19 General Domestic SErvant Devon Stonehouse
Florrie daur S 17 Dressmaker " "
May daur S 15                        " "
Rosa daur S 12 " "
Ethel daur S 10 " "
Maude daur 8 " "
Edith daur 6 " "
RG13; Piece: 2111; Folio: 60; Page: 16

I found the entry that Tati has given and also a possible nephew of William and Sarah Davies.

I think to be able to pin down his parents and family you will need his marriage certificate, but there are a couple of William Shutt marriages in Devon in the early 1880's so I think you will need to start with the birth certificate of one of the children which will give you Elizabeth's maiden name.

Hi
Many thanks to you both for your help :)
William married in 1878 in Devonport to Elizabeth Ann Pearce of Lostwithiel, so that much I know. I did a search on the IGI for WIlliam and came up with a chap b. 1852 son of Richard & Eleanor. Now usually you can see which is likeliest as the children tended to be named after the father, grandfather etc, but there are no clues at all amongst William's children which is a little frustrating. His second son was William, named for himself I would think, which would indicate that the eldest son, Henry, would be named for WIlliam's father - but no Henry's about :( Are there other Shropshire resources I could try in order to find out - or can |I push my luck and see if anyone can find a Henry for me :)
Its not a place I've ever had to research - being Cornish, and bearing in mind where Cornwall is, my ancestors tended to marry other Cornish people as there wasn't much choice! Researching anything the other side of the Tamar is a bit alien to me, (though there is some Cheshire and Isle of Wight ancestry I have) So if anyone can help me further I'd be even more grateful than I am already to Tati & MaryA :)
kind regards
Damien

Damien, I really think you need to order William's marriage certificate.

Here's what looks like Richard and Eleanor:

1851
HO107/1987 344 17
Shiffnal Common

Rd Shutt, head, 31, Labourer, b. Salop Burlington
Ellen, wife, 29, b. Salop Hatton
Sarah Ann, dau, 1, b. do.
Mary Jones, serv, 14, House servant, b. Salop Newtown

1861
RG9/1854 50 8
Shifnal, Shropshire

Elizabeth Shutt, head, wid, 72, b. Shiffnal
Sarah Ann, visitor, 11, b. Hatton
Richard, son, wid, 40, House servant, b. Shiffnal
Henry, son, wid, 39, Gardener, b. do.

William probably being the nephew Mary mentioned. Age 9, born Shifnal, in Shifnal with William and Sarah Davies.
