Hi Roy - how are you?

I didn't see Walter immediately in 1881 (when he would have been about 10), but here he is in 1901 to give a baseline - places of birth etc.  You can of course search the 1881 census yourself, free.

RG13/4934/171/20

Walter J BIRD H M 29 - police constable - Gloster Bristol
Isola W M 23 - Mon Risca
George son 2 - do Bedwas
Ivor G son 1 - do do

Address: 21 Abertillery Rd, Aberystruth, Monmouthshire

Hi Roy

Do you have the marriage cert?

If so, please post the occupation of James BIRD and the names of the witnesses to the marriage?

Ta!

Hello Arrowroots, good to hear from you.

Info off marriage cert:
James Bird occ General Labourer.
wit: Eliz Ann Harris & looks like Thomas Harris

The only Walter J Bird with father James Bird located on the 81C is as follows:

James Byrd       HD   M   43   Uffculme, Devon,  occ. Tailor Prison Officer
Sarah  Byrd       WI   M   50    Hemyock, Devon
Edward J. Byrd  SO         13    Wandsworth, Surrey
Walter J. Byrd    SO         09    Wandsworth, Surrey

Source: "Her Majestys Prison" Wandsworth Common
Census: Wandsworth, Surrey, Eng
Ref: RG11/0660/154/43

Is it the right entry?  Probable the ideal place for the young Walter to learn about being a police constable.

Best regards
Roy

I wonder if this might be your man?

Note that he is enumerated as Walker...

RG11/2426/28/24

James BIRD H M 39 - ag lab - Somerset Gurney Slade
Anne W M 39 - do Sutton Wick
Walker son 9 - scholar - Bristol
George son 7 - do - Somerset Bishop Sutton
Emily dau 4 - do
Joseph son 1 - do

Address: Sutton, Chew Magna, Somerset

The occupation of James as an ag lab looks a bit more likely than the prison officer, d'you think?

The Chew Magna family are in the same place in 1891, but Walter/ Walker is not with them.

This is possibly him, however:

I had wondered if Maria's maiden name was BIRD, but it doesn't look likely

In 1871 James BIRD (Walter's father) is an unmarried lodger in the ROBBINS household, Stowey, Somerset.

I can't see his marriage to Anne at the moment.
