Southern Willington Quay
« on: Friday 12 October 07 00:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have hit a brick wall with my 4G Grandfather William Southern he was born in Willington Quay around 1781.  He was a Keelman.

We believe his wife was Catherine but have not so far been able to find a record of their marriage. Their son William was my 3G Grandfather.

If anyone has access to any records which might help us  solve this one and move on beyond William senior your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
best regards

Thank you very much, the best thing about getting information like this is it makes you stop and think.

I originally picked up William Snr and Catherine on the 1841 census living in Keelmans Row Willington. As a large number of my ancestors are from that immediate area I naturally and seemingly  incorrectly assumed that W & C also hailed from there. I also found on the BMD both a W&C dying in the Tynemouth region  before the next census so did not pursue this root to c1851.

After reading your post I thought I would check my logic again when I  visited William Jnr  on c1951 (also in Keelmans  Row) I couldnt believe what I was looking at, in the next  building lived William Southern, Waterman from Newburn !!  ( William Jnr's parents in law lived 3 doors away on the other side ... a real family environment !!).  I wasnt looking for him so I hadnt seen him !!??!!

Its perfectly reasonable I guess that a Keelman bringing coal down the river from Newburn might decide to settle in Willington closer to the river mouth.

Anyway  it seems likely  that this is the Wm and Catherine that I have been looking for and Newburn is a new location  to search.

(William Jr was born in 1813 and baptised in Wallsend late for the son bearing the fathers name ??).

Thanks again
Dave

Dave,

NAMES
The naming pattern in vogue in that era was for parents to call their first son after the child's father's father. It was the third son that was given his father's name. ( Second son called after his mother's father) For full "rules" google on "english naming pattern".

KEELMEN
If Keelmen were taking coal from Newburn to Willington/Wallsend or thereabouts, they could have lived anywhere along that route. I suppose it might depend on where the keel was moored when not in action ?

NEWBURN PARISH
The A-Z of Newburn Parish ( including marriage index from 1659-1837, showing the Southern marriage already revealed by Daisy) is online at
