1851 COAKER lookup please
« on: Monday 15 October 07 19:34 BST (UK) »
Would someone kindly search the 1851 census for an Ann Hamlyn COAKER, born ca 1826 in Widecombe in the Moor. She would be single; I don't know her parent's names. Many thanks,
Anne

Hello Barbara,
Thanks for this.. the results are  "just my luck" these days. I'll have to think about that.  An Ann Hamlyn Coaker was a possible spouse for John Norsworthy in 1855.  Perhaps she first married a Coaker, and her maiden name was actually Hamlyn....... onward, onward :)

So is it John Norsworthy's spouse that you're really trying to find ?
Which John is he, date  & place of birth?

It looks as if the other couple on the same page (freebmd marriage 1855) Thomas Edward Drake and Caroline Mason Broderick did marry, they seem to be in Widecombe in 1861 census, so I think you're right that John Norsworthy did marry Ann Hamlyn Coaker.

Will have another look, but the closest match I can see is in Plymouth, John Norsworthy born c.1822 Newton, wife Ann M b. c1823 Widecombe and daughter Mary b. c1854 Totnes - was that the Ann you were looking for?

edit:  Have just found a marriage for Ann Hamlyn SMERDON to William COAKER Dec.Qu 1845 Newton Abbot 10/259, so will look for them in 1851 - if William had died by then she could be the one in the census I gave you

Just checked the 1841 census for William, and I think this is him with the same family I gave you for 1851, so looking possible! Can't find William in 1851

1841 HO107/232/6 fol.5 p.4
Bellaford, Lidford, Devon
COAKER
John      45   Farmer  Y (b.in county)
Ann       40                N (not b. in county)
John      20                Y
William  15                Y
Ann       15                Y
Richard  30   M.S       Y

Barbara you are right on... I just found the birth reg. for the first son of John NOSWORTHY and Ann [unknown] and he was named William Robert Smerdon NOSWORTHY. (All census info has him as William R. Nosworthy)....... so Ann's maiden name was most likely SMERDON.  I think we have done it !!!! That has been needing to be solved for a very long time. Thank you very much.

The marriage you found for Ann Hamlyn Smerdon couldn't have been on FreeBMD, was it, as I checked it just a few minutes ago.. that is a marriage for Ann Smerdon... it should have come up. Just wondering if my search skills are in need of a touchup :) :)

Thanks again..

Yes the marriage was on freebmd, I found it originally by entering just surname Coaker and then spouse forename Ann, then waded through the likely ones!  If you enter Coaker William, it should appear, but remember on freebmd just one mistyped letter and....no luck!

Glad to help, just say if you need any other census lookups
